🏥 Registered Nurse – Orthopedics (Ortho)
Burlington, NC
Join a fast-paced orthopedic and med-surg unit within Cone Health, offering strong interdisciplinary support and a wide variety of surgical and medical patient populations. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced travel RN ready to step into a high-responsibility leadership-capable role.
⭐ Position Highlights
- 🌙Night Shift: 3x12 (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- 🏥32-bed Ortho/Med-Surg Telemetry unit
- 🔄Every other weekend required (Sat/Sun)
- 🚫No call requirement
- 🚫No local candidates (50-mile radius restriction)
- ⭐Charge RN opportunity included (required experience)
🏥 Unit Overview
This is a high-volume orthopedic and medical-surgical unit providing care for adult and geriatric patients recovering from:
- Total joint replacements
- Fracture repairs & trauma ortho cases
- Spine and kyphoplasty procedures
- General medical-surgical admissions
- ED overflow/high-acuity observation patients
The unit includes a physical therapy gym on-site, allowing patients to receive therapy without leaving the unit,
enhancing recovery efficiency and workflow.
🩺 Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years RN experience
- Previous travel RN experience REQUIRED
- Charge RN experience REQUIRED
- Strong Med-Surg / Ortho / Telemetry background
- Comfortable in fast-paced, high-turnover environments
⚙️ Key Clinical Skills
- IV therapy, PICC/central line management
- Blood product administration
- Wound care & wound vac management
- Orthopedic post-op care (total joints, fractures)
- Telemetry & dysrhythmia interpretation
- Tracheostomy & respiratory support (CPAP/BiPAP)
- CVA & post-neuro surgical care
- Pain management including PCA pumps & heparin therapy
🏥 Facility Details
- 32-bed orthopedic & med-surg telemetry unit
- Mix of RN and LPN staffing model
- Charge nurses carry patient assignments
- Strong interdisciplinary support:
- PT / OT
- Respiratory Therapy
- Pharmacy
- Rapid Response Team
- Radiology & IV team support
📊 Patient Ratios
- Typically 1:5–6
- High acuity orthopedic + medical-surgical mix
- Telemetry monitoring available on unit
🧪 Requirements
- Active RN license
- BLS required
- Must pass EKG interpretation exam (Pass/Fail required)
- Must be flexible with scheduling (unit-driven schedules every 6 weeks)
- Must be comfortable floating to similar med-surg units

- No local candidates (within 50 miles not eligible)
- Must provide valid Driver’s License at the time of submission for address verification
- Must be flexible with scheduling and punctuality expectations (zero tolerance policy)
- Must be aware of EKG competency testing requirement during onboarding
