Description

Primary Roles & Responsibilities

Clinical Operations Management

  • Direct and oversee daily operations of the Cardiovascular Operating Room department
  • Ensure efficient scheduling and coordination of cardiac and vascular surgical procedures
  • Maintain readiness of CVOR suites, surgical equipment, and specialty instrumentation
  • Monitor patient flow, case progression, and operating room efficiency
  • Ensure compliance with perioperative safety and infection prevention standards

Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Supervise CVOR nurses, surgical technologists, anesthesia support staff, and ancillary personnel
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate department staff
  • Develop staffing schedules and ensure adequate coverage for elective and emergency procedures
  • Conduct staff performance evaluations and competency assessments
  • Mentor and support clinical leadership development among nursing staff

Quality Improvement & Patient Safety

  • Implement and monitor quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives
  • Ensure adherence to:
    • AORN standards
    • Joint Commission regulations
    • CMS requirements
    • Infection prevention protocols
  • Review incident reports, patient outcomes, and risk management data
  • Lead initiatives to improve patient safety, surgical outcomes, and operational efficiency

Financial & Resource Management

  • Manage departmental budgets, staffing productivity, and supply utilization
  • Oversee inventory management of cardiac surgical supplies and specialty equipment
  • Collaborate with vendors and purchasing departments regarding cardiovascular products and devices
  • Monitor cost containment while maintaining quality patient care

Perioperative & Clinical Oversight

  • Ensure safe perioperative nursing care throughout pre-op, intra-op, and immediate post-op phases
  • Assist with high-acuity or emergency cardiac cases when needed
  • Ensure proper functioning and availability of:
    • Cardiopulmonary bypass support systems
    • Cell saver devices
    • Hemodynamic monitoring equipment
    • Specialty cardiovascular instrumentation
  • Maintain emergency preparedness within the CVOR department

Staff Education & Competency

  • Coordinate orientation and onboarding of new CVOR staff
  • Facilitate continuing education and specialty training opportunities
  • Promote certification achievement such as:
    • CNOR
    • RNFA
    • CVOR specialty competencies
  • Ensure annual competency validations and mandatory education compliance

Collaboration & Communication

  • Collaborate with:
    • Cardiothoracic surgeons
    • Vascular surgeons
    • Anesthesia providers
    • Perfusionists
    • CVICU leadership
    • Hospital administration
  • Participate in interdisciplinary meetings and strategic planning initiatives
  • Address patient, physician, and staff concerns professionally and efficiently
