Floating
Travelers may float to:
- Tele
- Surgical
- Ortho Neuro
- Medical units
Travelers will only care for medical patients, not specialty assignments.
Floating frequency varies and follows the same rotation as permanent staff.

Important Deadlines
- All PPW due Wednesday at noon MST the week before start
- Biweekly orientation dates: 6/15 or 6/29
- Permanent address must be at least 25 miles from the facility
Unit Overview
- 24 private beds
- Typical medical unit with a wide variety of patient populations
Common Diagnoses/Patient Types
- COPD
- Psych
- Detox
- Oncologic emergencies (neutropenic fevers)
- Blood transfusions
- Failure to thrive
- Falls
- General medical patients
Manager is looking for strong medical nurses, not oncology-focused nurses.
Staffing Ratios
RN Ratios
- Days: 1:4–5 (goal of 1:4)
- Nights: 1:5–6 (goal of 1:5)
CNA Ratios
- Days: 1:6–10
- Nights: 1:8–12
Support Staff
- Charge nurse on both shifts
- Usually does not take assignments
- Occasionally may take a chemo patient on nights
- Rapid Response Nurse available 24/7
- Remote telemetry technicians monitor tele boxes
Required Certifications
- BLS
- RQI (completed during orientation)
- Equivalent to BLS
- Takes approximately 15 minutes
Drips & Skills
Travelers are required to titrate:
- Heparin
- Fentanyl
Travelers are not required to administer chemotherapy.
Respiratory Equipment
- CPAP
- BiPAP maintenance
- High-flow oxygen
Respiratory Therapy handles primary management and is in-house 24/7.
Scheduling
Shift Times
- 6:45 AM
- 6:45 PM
Scheduling Details
- Self-scheduling allowed
- Block scheduling allowed
- Manager prefers night shift travelers who can work:
- Sunday / Monday / Tuesday
- Manager tries to keep shifts consecutive whenever possible
Weekend Requirement
- Every other weekend
- 4 weekend shifts every 4-week schedule
- Weekend nights = Friday & Saturday
If traveler works blocked Sun/Mon/Tues schedule, weekend requirement may not apply.
Holidays
- Holiday shifts are based on unit needs
- Travelers should be flexible
- Greatest need is during holiday season for night shift coverage
Call / Low Census
- Occasional on-call requirements during low census
- Travelers may be called in at any time while on call
- On-call pay is lower than regular pay
- Call schedule follows rotation unless otherwise requested
- Navy blue scrubs
- Professional appearance required
Orientation
- 3 orientation shifts with a preceptor
- Additional orientation available if needed
Scheduling System
Agency staff are allowed to enter schedules directly into Kronos. After all schedules are submitted, the manager balances staffing while trying to:
- Minimize schedule changes
- Keep night shifts grouped together when possible
