Description

RN — MedSurg/Telemetry (Night)
Macon, GA 
Facility: 637-bed Level 1 Trauma Teaching Hospital; Chest Pain & Stroke Centers

Shift: 12-hr Nights (1900–0700) — 36 hours/week
Schedule: 5–6 weekend shifts per 6-week cycle; holiday coverage (one major holiday shift required)
Contract: Travel position — first-time travelers accepted

Core Requirements

  • License: Active RN license (state-specific requirements apply)
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years Med/Tele nursing preferred; will accept first-time travelers
  • EMR: 6 months EPIC experience required
  • Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred (traveler must pass EKG competency during onboarding)
  • Other: Must pass facility onboarding competencies

Unit & Patient Population

  • Units: Inpatient Med Surg / Telemetry units (20–36 beds per unit); travelers float to all Med/Tele units and may assist ED holds
  • Common diagnoses: Acute/chronic medical conditions, diabetes, HTN, infections, electrolyte imbalances; cardiac (post-cath, CHF, a-fib); post-op (general, ortho, trauma)

Patient Ratios & Support

  • RN: 1:4–6; LPN: 1:4–6; CNA: up to 1:14
  • Support staff: CNA, unit secretary (7a–11p on-unit), charge nurse, phlebotomy (lab collects; RNs draw from CVLs), PICC team, discharge/resource nurses, RT 24/7, hospitalists & intensivists 24/7, central telemetry monitoring/tech

Clinical Skills & Procedures (Required)

  • Telemetry: Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, post-cath care, TR bands, groin site care (no sheath pulls)
  • IV/drip management: Insulin, heparin, Cardizem, amiodarone, milrinone, digoxin, nicardipine; may titrate drips for HR (not BP)
  • Hands-on skills: Trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts and IV maintenance, CVL care, glucomanager use
  • Assessment/coordination: Strong assessment, time management, care coordination, discharge planning, patient education

Technology & Equipment

  • EMR: EPIC (required)
  • IV pumps: Alaris
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis
  • Monitors: Phillips; unit VS3 vital sign monitors; Nova glucose stat strips

Orientation & Evaluations

  • Orientation: 1 day facility orientation + work on educational modules; 2 days departmental orientation
  • Competency: Traveler will complete EKG competency and any drug/skill checks during onboarding

Logistics & Culture

  • Scrub colors: RN — Navy; LPN — Ceil Blue
  • Parking: Free campus parking available; paid parking decks optional
  • Unit culture: Busy, team-oriented

Notes for Recruiters (optional to include)

  • Travelers float to all med-surg/telemetry units and may be floated to ED for holds.
  • Certification in med-surg is a plus.
  • No IV team (PICC team available); RNs responsible for IV care except routine PICC placements.
