Required Certifications
ACLS, BLS Certification, NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program), Stable RN /ID compact license
Shift Notes
7p-7a, weekends as needed, first to float
Required Experience:
✔ 3 years of L&D experience required
✔ Mother/Baby experience Must have mother baby experience- prefer 1 year,
✔ Okay with a first-time traveler
Candidate MUST be able to independently:
- Attend deliveries
- Complete 1 hour of newborn care
- Work triage
- Circulate C-sections
- Provide postpartum couplet care
- Manage magnesium patients

Unit Overview
# of LDRP Beds:
14 LDRP beds – patients stay in the same room throughout Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum.
(No room transfers between stages of care.)
# of OR Suites on the unit for C-Sections:
2 OR suites – RNs will circulate and recover C-section patients.
# of Triage Beds:
4 triage beds – travelers will be expected to staff triage assignments.
Birth Volume:
- 90 births/month
- 1200 births/year
(Moderate delivery volume facility.)
Staffing & Ratios
Do you follow AWHONN guidelines for ratios?
✔ Follow AWHONN Staffing Standards
- 1:1 labor assignments
- May pair 2 cervical ripening patients
- Postpartum: 1:3 couplet care
- Triage: 1:3 ratio
- If triage increases to 4 patients, a Resource Nurse is utilized
Required Certifications
✔ NPR
✔ BLS
✔ ACLS
✔ STABLE
(All certifications must be active before start date.)
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
Common patient types include:
- 32 week gestation and greater
- HTN patients receiving magnesium
- BACs / TOLACs
- Gestational diabetes
- Some antepartum patients
Additional Notes:
- Community includes many home birth midwives
- Patients often present for medical intervention and pain control
- Facility serves a very diverse population
Facility DOES NOT take:
❌ Placenta previa
❌ Placenta accreta
Preferred:
⭐ Charge Nurse experience
Drips
Are RNs required to titrate drips?
✔ Yes
Common drips include:
- Pitocin Protocol
- Magnesium Protocol
- Insulin drips (occasionally)
Charge Nurse / Support Staff
Unit Support Structure:
✔ Admin Supervisor on every shift
✔ Dedicated Charge RN
✔ Resource RN
✔ Triage RN
Important Notes:
- Charge RNs do NOT take patient assignments
- Resource & Triage RNs may begin shift without patients but become busy quickly
- Resource nurse assists with:
- Break coverage
- Deliveries (“baby catcher”)
- Newborn stabilization
- Physical assessments
- Care during first 2 hours of life
- Second medication sign-off
Support Staff
Nurse Aids / Surgical Techs:
✔ 1 CST per shift
✔ 1 CNA scheduled per shift
⚠ However, if there is a HUC sick call, the CNA may cover that role, meaning CNA support may not always be available.
Provider Coverage
OB/Neonatologist Coverage:
✔ OB Hospitalist 24/7
✔ Neonatal NP 24/7
Anesthesia Coverage:
✔ In-house anesthesia 24/7
Respiratory Therapy:
✔ RT available for troubleshooting
Telemetry / Monitoring
Tele/Monitor Techs:
- No tele techs on unit
- Tele capability exists but is rarely used
- Patients typically transferred to higher level of care if needed
EFM System:
✔ Centricity
Scheduling
Shift Times:
✔ 7:00 – 7:00
Charge & Resource Shift Times:
- 0645-1845
- 1845-0645
Scheduling Notes:
- First schedule = travelers fill unit needs
- Future schedules may allow preferences
- Travelers scheduled around core staff needs
⚠ Block scheduling is NOT guaranteed
⚠ Cannot work 6 shifts in a row
Weekend & Holiday Requirements
Weekend Requirement:
✔ No minimum requirement
✔ Based on unit needs
Holiday Requirement:
✔ No set holiday requirement for travelers
✔ May work holidays depending on staffing needs during contract
Call Requirement
✔ No call required
Floating Requirements
Travelers may float to:
- St. Luke’s Meridian
- St. Luke’s Nampa
- St. Luke’s Boise
Float Areas:
- L&D
- Postpartum
- Antepartum
- Sitter assignments
⚠ Must float within primary skill set when needed.
Dress Code
Scrubs:
✔ Hospital-issued scrubs only
⚠ Required to change into and out of scrubs at beginning/end of shift.
Orientation
Orientation Includes:**
✔ 4 shifts on unit
Orientation covers:
- C-section circulation
- Labor
- Postpartum
Additional Requirement:
✔ Compliance and EPIC Curio assignments must be completed before start date.
