Description

Job Title: VAD Coordinator RN / LVAD Nurse

 

Certifications:

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • BSN

Skills:
Clinical Assessment and Skills:

  • Abnormal VAD parameters
  • Assess pump function
  • Cardiovascular assessment
  • Driveline exit site assessment
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Normal VAD parameters
  • Preoperative evaluation of VAD patients
  • Psychosocial assessment
  • Signs of complications:
    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Stroke
    • Thrombosis
    • Right heart failure
  • Volume status and perfusion

Patient and Family Education:

  • Activity restrictions and lifestyle modifications
  • Alarm recognition and response
  • Device operation
  • Driveline care and dressing changes
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Infection prevention
  • Validates patient and caregiver competency

Equipment and Devices:

  • Battery changes
  • Controller exchanges
  • Emergency procedures:
    • Controller failure
    • Pump stop
  • Identifies and responds to device alarms
  • Power source management (battery vs AC power)
  • System checks and troubleshooting
  • VAD device components

Professional Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bridge to Recovery
  • Bridge to Transplant (BTT)
  • Care coordination
  • Changes in patient status
  • Coordinates readmissions when needed
  • Destination Therapy (DT)
  • Discharge planning
  • Isolation Precautions / PPE
  • Maintains VAD logs, discharge checklists, and parameter sheets
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory bodies*
  • Progress monitoring and reporting
  • Review lab tests
  • Universal precautions

Additional Skills:

  • VAD Management*
*** Experience managing VAD outpatient preferred, 2 years cardiac ICU or CTICU experience with VAD management required or 2 years ambulatory VAD management required Required: CA RN License AHA BLS ACLS Cardiology and ICU exp 2 Ambulatory VAD Management Required. Ability to float to other UCSF Facilities.
