Travel Registered Nurse (RN) — Progressive Care Unit (PCU / Cardiac)

Location:  Winston-Salem, NC 27157

Unit: Cardiac PCU (28 Beds | Average Census: 26)

Shift: 12-Hour Nights (1830–0700) | 36 Hours/Week | Every Other Weekend | 75% Holiday Commitment | No Call

🛑 Submission & Profile Requirements

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year of dedicated Cardiology/Cardiac Stepdown experience.
  • Licensure: Active North Carolina (NC) or Compact RN License.
  • Required Certifications:
    • AHA BLS & ACLS
    • NIHSS
  • First-Time Travelers: Accepted
  • Floating Expectations: Priority float is within the Cardiology Division, followed by general Med-Surg units as needed. Profiles include a 5 Facility Float Clause for emergencies only. Centralized telemetry applies.

🛠️ Required Clinical Skills & Core Competencies

Common Patient Diagnoses

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS), NSTEMI / STEMI, and Chest Pain rule-outs
  • Advanced Heart Failure & Arrhythmia management
  • Post-Cardiac Cath care (PCI with or without stent interventions)
  • Post-Electrophysiology (EP) procedures (Pacemaker insertions, ICDs, Ablations)
  • Vascular conditions (Peripheral Artery Disease, AAA Repairs, DVT / PE)

Technical Skills

  • Advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation and strip verification (required once per shift).
  • Peripheral blood draws (Phlebotomy handles most, but no dedicated IV/VAT team on site).
  • High-Acuity Titrations: Must be highly proficient and comfortable independently titrating a broad array of cardiac and critical care drips, including:

    Argatroban, Digoxin, Diltiazem, Dobutamine, Dofetilide, Dopamine, Esmolol, Lasix, Insulin, Labetalol, Lidocaine, Milrinone, Nicardipine, Nitroglycerine, Sotalol, and Tirofiban.

👥 Ratios & Unit Support

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4 – 1:5
  • CNA Ratio: 1:11 – 1:14 (CNAs assist with vital signs, blood glucose checks, ADLs, and hourly safety rounds)
  • Charge Nurse: Available, may or may not carry a light patient assignment.
  • In-House Support: 24/7 Hospitalists, 24/7 Intensivists, 24/7 Respiratory Therapy (available via page), and a dedicated Unit Receptionist/HUC.

  • Schedule: Hospital New Employee Orientation (NEO) followed by 2 days of dedicated, departmental unit orientation.
