Registered Nurse ED

 

 Facility & Unit Overview

  • Location: West Allis, WI 53227
  • Facility Size: 277 Hospital Beds
  • Trauma / Care Level: Level IV Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Primary Stroke Center
  • ED Unit Size: 20 Beds (plus 8 Overflow beds and 4 Clinical Assessment/CA Chairs)
  • Patient Volume: 100–200 patients/day
  • Patient Population: Neonates to Geriatric (10%–15% pediatrics)
  • Common Acuities: Chest pain, dizziness, syncope, strokes, sepsis, ortho, respiratory distress/failure, STEMI, COVID, and Behavioral Health (Medical Clearance).

📋 Traveler Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience Rules: * With Travel Experience: Must have at least 1 year of dedicated ED experience within the past year. Additional 2–5 years of general nursing experience is preferred.
    • First-Time Travelers: Accepted only with 3+ years of solid ED experience.
  • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NIHSS
  • Preferred Certifications: TNCC, CEN, CPI or MOAB
  • Required Skills: General ED competencies, strong peripheral IV skills, cardiac rhythm interpretation/monitoring, Foley and NGT placement, medication titration, and advanced knowledge of STEMI/CVA/Sepsis protocols.

💻 Tech & Ancillary Support

  • EMR: EPIC (Strictly required within the last 2 years)
  • Equipment: Alaris IV Pumps, Pyxis Medication Dispensing
  • Telemetry: Monitored at bedside and central nurses station (no designated Tele Tech; nurses monitor their own rhythms)
  • Unit Support Staff:
    • 24/7 coverage: Receptionist/HUC, Respiratory Therapy (RT), and Hospitalist/PA.
    • Charge Nurse: Does not have a fixed assignment but will take patients as needed or cover low-acuity cases.
    • Resource Nurse: A dedicated "Flow Nurse" is available during peak hours.
    • Phlebotomy: Available to assist with peripheral blood draws as needed.
    • ED Educator: Available Monday through Friday.

🔄 Ratios, Floating, & Expectations

  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: * Days: 1:3–1:4
    • Nights: 1:4–1:5
  • Floating Policy: Travelers float first based on facility needs. However, you will not take a patient assignment when floated; you will function strictly as "helping hands" (tasking, sitting, running).
  • Orientation: 1 Shift Total. The first few hours consist of onboarding with the Nurse Manager/Supervisor, and the remainder of the shift is spent on the floor with a preceptor.

🚗 Logistics & Dress Code

  • Scrub Color: Any color is fine, but must look professional. Strictly no camouflage, denim, or hoodies.
  • Parking: Free. Travelers must park in the East parking structure on the 3rd floor or higher.
