Position: OB Tech (CST) – Birthing Pavilion

Schedule: 36 hrs/week | Day/Night Rotating

Facility: Critical Access Hospital (2 ORs, 1 Endoscopy Suite)
Call: Light call after training (emergent only, no trauma)

Overview

The Certified Surgical Technician (CST) supports the surgical team in a small, fast-paced birthing pavilion. This role focuses on maintaining a sterile field, preparing surgical instruments, and anticipating surgeon needs for OB/GYN procedures, including C-sections and related cases.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Duties

• Prepare and organize surgical instruments and maintain sterile back table
• Ensure all instruments, sutures, and equipment are available prior to procedures
• Maintain aseptic technique during all procedures and sterile setup
• Perform room turnover efficiently before and after cases
• Manage steam sterilization processes including chemical/biological monitoring
• Conduct accurate surgical counts (instruments, sponges, needles) and resolve discrepancies immediately
• Verify proper functioning of all equipment prior to procedures
• Maintain sterile field throughout intra-operative phase
• Set up for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled start time
• Collaborate with nursing team to maintain inventory and equipment readiness

Patient Care

• Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping
• Provide professional interaction with patients and families, including reassurance and communication
• Identify and escalate patient concerns to licensed staff
• Adapt care techniques to individual patient needs

OB/GYN Focus

• Scrub basic cases independently
• Support procedures including:
  • Cesarean Sections
  • Hysterectomies
  • Episiotomies
• Understand Labor & Delivery workflows, supply needs, and sterile requirements
