SICU RN – Surgical Intensive Care Unit (2E SICU)

📍 Position Overview

• Unit: 2E SICU (Surgical Intensive Care Unit)
• Local Rate Rule: Candidates living within 80 miles of the facility are 

🕒 Schedule

• Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
• Night Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
• Manager schedules travelers based on unit needs and approved RTO.

📅 Weekend & Holiday Requirements

• Every other weekend
• Every other holiday
• Additional shifts may be available for those willing to work more

✅ Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NIHSS

⭐ Preferred Certification

• TNCC

🏥 Patient Population

This is a high-acuity Surgical ICU serving as a tertiary care center.

Common patient populations include:

• CABG, AVR, MVR
• AAA Repairs
• Trauma Patients (Level II Trauma Center)
• NSTEMI/STEMI
• Vascular Surgery
• Neurosurgery
• General Surgery
• Orthopedic Surgery
• ENT Surgery
• Post-operative ICU patients

💉 Required Clinical Skills

Candidates should have experience with:

• High-acuity ICU patients
• Ventilator management
• Hemodynamic monitoring
• Titration of vasoactive drips
• Post-operative surgical ICU care

Preferred Experience

• CRRT
• IABP
• Impella
• ECMO
• Immediate Post-Op Cardiac Surgery Patients

While not required, these skills are highly desirable.

• 1:2 Standard ICU Assignment
• 1:1 High Acuity Patients
  • CRRT
  • Immediate Post-Op Hearts
  • Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP)
  • Organ Procurement Patients (OPO)
• 1:3 Med-Surg/Floor Status Patients

Must be comfortable titrating:

• Epinephrine
• Norepinephrine
• Vasopressin
• Dobutamine
• Dopamine
• Milrinone
• Phenylephrine (Neo)
• Propofol
• Precedex
• Heparin
• Insulin

🏥 Unit Resources

• Intensivist in-house 24/7
• House Supervisor available 24/7
• RT available 24/7
• GE Monitoring Systems
• Nurses are responsible for reading and documenting rhythm strips

Respiratory Equipment

• Mechanical Ventilators
• BiPAP
• CPAP
• Vapotherm
• Advanced respiratory support devices

🔄 Floating Requirements

If not needed in SICU, travelers may float to:

1. MICU
2. Patient Observer/Safety Sitter Assignments
   • Suicide Observation
   • BiPAP Safety Monitoring
   • Other Hospital Observation Needs

👥 Support Staff

• Charge Nurse every shift
  • Typically free charge
  • May take patients if census requires
• Day Shift: 1 Nursing Assistant for unit
• Night Shift: Typically no Nursing Assistant

👕 Dress Code

• No specific scrub color required
• Professional and clean appearance required

📚 Orientation

• 1 Day Hospital/System Orientation & CBTs
• 2 Unit Orientation Shifts
• Skills Checklist Completion Required
