Position Overview:
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is responsible for specimen processing, laboratory testing, result reporting, and quality assurance activities in a hospital laboratory setting. This role supports patient diagnosis and treatment by providing accurate and timely laboratory results across multiple disciplines, including Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Clinical Microscopy.
Required Qualifications:
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
- High School Diploma or GED plus approved laboratory training, military laboratory training, or qualifying college coursework.
- Medical Laboratory Technician certification from a nationally recognized certifying agency required within 18 months of hire.
- Minimum 6 months of documented bench experience in:
- Blood Bank
- Microbiology
- Chemistry
- Hematology
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with qualifying coursework in Medical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, and Biology.
- MLS, Medical Technologist (MT), or equivalent certification required within 18 months of hire.
- Minimum 1 year of clinical laboratory experience, including rotations in:
- Blood Bank
- Microbiology
- Chemistry
- Hematology
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen collection, processing, testing, and reporting according to laboratory policies and regulatory standards.
- Conduct Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Perform and document corrective actions when testing systems fall outside established performance standards.
- Participate in proficiency testing and laboratory accreditation activities.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and ensure availability of supplies and reagents.
- Accurately document patient information and test results in electronic health records (EHR).
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams regarding laboratory testing and results.
- Provide guidance and support to laboratory personnel, including technicians, assistants, and phlebotomists.
- Follow infection control protocols and proper PPE usage at all times.
- Participate in continuing education, departmental meetings, and training activities.

- Knowledge of laboratory instrumentation and testing procedures.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Basic computer proficiency and EHR experience.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Work Environment:
- Hospital laboratory setting.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, infectious materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment.
- Frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 34 lbs., and prolonged use of laboratory instruments and computer systems.
