Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Augusta, Georgia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 14 weeks


Job Summary

  • Patient population: Adults to Geriatrics
  • Unit type: Medical Surgical Oncology
  • Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
  • Average daily census: 15 patients (19 beds total)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:6
  • Floating: Yes, within facility and possibly to a nearby campus (~3 miles away)
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
  • Call: None
  • Holiday work: Required to work major holidays during assignment (expectation varies by number of holidays)
  • Orientation: Maximum 7 days return to office (RTO)
  • Electronic systems: Epic (required), Pyxis, SBAR
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Georgia
  • Minimum 2 years of oncology nursing experience, with oncology experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical record system

Clinical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Care for oncology patients from diagnosis through end-of-life
  • Manage hematology diagnoses and oncologic emergencies
  • Experience with DNR/Comfort Care patients
  • Administer chemotherapy precautions
  • Manage morphine and dilaudid drips, CADD pumps, PCA pumps

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Full compliance required to start on time; delays may push start date by 2 weeks due to orientation scheduling
  • Background check required within 30 days of start, including national and county criminal searches, sex offender registry, and education verification
  • Education verification required; diploma/transcript may be accepted if degree verification is pending
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug test within 60 days of start (includes amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, methadone, PCP, THC, etc.)
  • Physical exam: Required within 12 months prior to start
  • Immunizations and titers required or documentation of immunity:
    • TB test (PPD, QGold, or TSpot) within 12 months or chest x-ray if positive history
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Varicella – 2 vaccines or positive titer with boosters if needed
    • Hepatitis B surface antibody titer or signed declination
    • Flu vaccine or signed declination (required during flu season)
    • TDAP highly recommended but not required
  • Annual TB questionnaire required regardless of TB test results
  • Color blindness test required; alternative assessment available if needed
  • Competency exams required by agency (medication test, dysrhythmia/EKG competency for telemetry-related units)

Additional Requirements

  • Skills checklist updated within 12 months
  • Verification of most recent work history required (can be pending with proof of processing)
  • Two clinical references required
  • Must review and sign facility-specific policies including Code of Conduct and Dress/Professional Appearance Policy

  • Locals accepted at same rate
  • Number of non-billable orientation hours depends on contract length
  • Floating may include work at a nearby campus within 3 miles
  • No call responsibilities
  • Major holidays include New Year’s, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break (no RTO during Spring Break)
