Overview
Step into a high-acuity, collaborative environment where your neuro expertise truly matters. As a Med Surg – Neuro Registered Nurse on R6 at Maine Medical Center’s Bramhall Campus, you’ll care for a diverse mix of neurosurgical, neuro/ortho, and trauma patients—ranging from spinal surgery and spine fractures to brain tumors, seizure disorders, VP shunts, head bleeds, traumatic injuries, and joint replacement surgery. This is a travel position designed for RNs who thrive on complex care, value strong team support, and want a consistent night schedule with every-other-weekend rotations, no call requirements, and the opportunity to work with Epic in a respected, Magnet-designated system.
Required Skills
- Current, active RN license in good standing
- Solid neuro/neurosurgical experience (REQUIRED) with comfort managing:
- Post-op neurosurgical patients (spine and cranial)
- Seizure disorders and related monitoring
- Head bleeds and traumatic injuries
- Demonstrated proficiency in med-surg nursing, including:
- Neurological assessments and frequent neuro checks
- Post-op monitoring, pain management, and early mobilization
- Medication administration, including high-alert and neuro-specific meds
- Safe, efficient care of 4–6 patients on nights (typical ratios)
- Strong clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills in a fast-paced environment
- Effective communication and collaboration with physicians, therapists, and the broader care team
- Ability to adapt and float to similar units as needed
- Commitment to patient safety, quality standards, and evidence-based practices
Nice to Have Skills
- Prior experience on a dedicated neuro, neurosurgical, or trauma floor
- Familiarity with Epic EMR (highly preferred, but training provided)
- Experience with orthopedic and joint replacement patients
- Background in Level I or II trauma settings
- Preceptor or charge nurse experience
- Comfort with rapid changes in patient condition and escalation of care
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; ASN/ADN considered with relevant experience
- Prior med-surg neuro/neurosurgical experience strongly preferred
- Experience working in an acute care hospital with similar patient ratios (days: 1:4–5; nights: 1:5–6)
Other Requirements
- Schedule:
- Primary shift: Nights, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- May occasionally rotate to days (7:00 AM – 7:30 AM) if needed
- Every other weekend required
- Status: Travel assignment (contractor replacement)
- Weekly hours: 36 hours guaranteed (when available)
- Call: No call requirements
- Float: As needed to similar units
- Certifications: No specific specialty certification required beyond active RN license
- Learning: Completion of standard unit education modules
- EMR: Epic
- Dress Code: Any scrub color; professional appearance required
