Job Title: Eye Technician

Location: Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation (TCRHCC)
Department: Eye Services
Reports To: Director of Eye Care Services
Position Type: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Eye Technician supports Eye Care Services by assisting providers with patient examinations, diagnostic testing, patient education, and clinical procedures. This role combines direct patient care and clerical responsibilities to improve departmental efficiency, maintain accurate patient records, support ophthalmic procedures, and ensure high-quality eye care services for patients of all ages.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Conduct vision screenings and record findings in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), including visual acuity, visual fields, pupillary measurements, and lensometry.
  • Obtain patient medical histories and document chief complaints.
  • Prepare patients and examination rooms for ophthalmic evaluations and procedures.
  • Assist eye care providers during examinations and procedures.
  • Administer ophthalmic diagnostic tests such as:
    • Tonometry
    • Visual field testing
    • Keratometry
    • Autorefraction
    • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
    • Color vision and depth perception testing
  • Perform anterior and retinal photography.
  • Instill ophthalmic medications as directed by providers.

Patient Care & Education

  • Educate patients regarding eye conditions, treatment plans, medication usage, eyewear, and contact lens care.
  • Provide interpretation services (English and Native languages as applicable).
  • Assist with patient follow-up and care coordination.
  • Support minor eyewear repairs and adjustments.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate patient records and complete daily documentation.
  • Enter provider orders and update patient charts.
  • Complete daily superbill reconciliation and reporting.
  • Schedule appointments and perform patient reminder calls.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and patient education materials.
  • Prepare clinic correspondence and administrative paperwork.

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Utilize required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Complete cleaning and decontamination tasks according to organizational policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational standards.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Certification

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, or ability to obtain within three months of hire.

Experience

  • Minimum of nine (9) months of direct patient care experience in an eye care, ophthalmology, optometry, or healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training as an Ophthalmic Technician or Optometric Technician.
  • One (1) year of eye care experience, including screening, testing, and patient education.
  • Knowledge of ocular diseases, optical prescriptions, and ophthalmic terminology.
  • Experience with contact lens education and eyewear fitting.
  • Ability to communicate in Navajo, Hopi, or San Juan Southern Paiute.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies and equipment up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Manual dexterity for operating ophthalmic equipment and computer systems.
  • Visual acuity correctable to 20/20 and normal color vision.
