Travel RN – Cardiac Neuro Stepdown
Assignment Details
- Specialty: Cardiac Neuro Stepdown
- Shift: Nights
- Schedule: 3x12-Hour Shifts
- Hours: 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM
- Contract Length: 13 Weeks
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 Hours Weekly
Important Requirements
- No Local Candidates (40-mile radius rule applies)
- Clinical Interview Required
- Active Compact RN License Required
- Recent EPIC Experience Required
- Travelers must successfully complete telemetry competency testing
Required Certifications
- AHA BLS
- AHA ACLS
- NIHSS
Experience Requirements
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- Minimum 2 years of recent Stepdown experience plus 1 completed travel contract, OR
- Minimum 5 years of recent Stepdown experience if no prior travel experience
Unit Overview
This is a 19-bed blended Cardiac Neuro Stepdown unit caring for high-acuity cardiac and neurological patients.
Unit Breakdown
- 8 Designated Stepdown Beds
- 11 Med/Surg Telemetry Beds
Staffing Ratios
- Night Shift: 1:4
- Charge Nurse takes a patient assignment
- Stepdown nurses may care for Med/Surg Telemetry patients as needed

- Post Cardiac Catheterization Patients
- Coronary Stents & Cardiac Interventions
- Pacemaker & ICD Patients
- Cardiac Ablation Recovery
- STEMI & NSTEMI Patients
- Carotid Endarterectomy Patients
- Sepsis
- Stroke (CVA) Patients
- Seizure Disorders
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
Required Clinical Skills
- Telemetry Monitoring
- 12-Lead EKG Interpretation
- Advanced Rhythm Recognition
- Post Heart Cath Recovery
- Femoral & TR Band Management
- NIH Stroke Scale Assessments
- Strong Neuro Assessments
- Sepsis Management
- Chest Tube Care
- Peripheral IV Insertion
- Critical Thinking & Rapid Clinical Decision Making
Drip Experience Required
Must be comfortable initiating and titrating:
- Cardizem
- Amiodarone
- Cardene
- Nitroglycerin
- Insulin
- Heparin
Floating Requirements
Travelers are first to float within their skill set and may float to:
- Deaconess Newburgh Campus (8 miles away)
- Deaconess Henderson Campus (11 miles away)
Additional Notes:
- Two-hour notice provided for cross-campus floating
- Mid-shift floating within the same campus may occur
- Cross-campus mid-shift floating is uncommon but possible
Weekend & Holiday Requirements
- Three weekends every six-week schedule
- Every other holiday
