Job Overview: Surgical Technologist (Travel / Agency)
Location: Milwaukee, WI
Patient Ratio: 1:1
Facility Profile
- Bed Capacity: 636 beds (Main OR features 21 beds)
- Trauma Level: Level III Trauma Center
- NICU Level: Level III NICU
- Designations: Magnet Designation, Primary Stroke Center
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience.
- Note: Not recommended for first-time travelers; requires further evaluation/approval from the hiring supervisor.
- Certifications: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and Basic Life Support (BLS) are required.
- Charting/Systems: Experience with EPIC, Alaris, and Pyxis.
Required Clinical Skills
Candidates should expect to be asked about the volume and frequency of the following cases:
1. Neuro / ENT
- Spine: Laminectomies, ALIFs, Fusions, and Discectomies.
- Cranial: Tumors, Subdural, VP shunts, and EVDs ( setting up the EVD system is not required ). AVMs/Aneurysms are a plus but not required.
- ENT: Neck dissections with flaps, Sinus Surgery, Basic ENT (Tonsils), and Tympanoplasty. Cochlear implants are not required.
- Navigation Equipment: Healthcare (Cranial & Spine), Healthcare Stealth (ENT), Stryker & Synaptive Navigation (Cranial).
2. Orthopedics
- Cases: Fractures, Anterior Hips, Total Joints, Ortho Spine, and Hand/Podiatry.
- Equipment: Hanna Table.
3. General & Specialties
- Cases: Breast/Plastics, Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), and Gynecology (GYN).
- Robotics: DaVinci XI. (Agency staff will not be trained on robots unless they possess a strong background and are committed to staying longer than one contract).
Scheduling, Floating, & Orientation
Shift Options
- Day Shift: Variable start times between 5:30 AM – 7:00 AM.
- PM Shift: Timings depend on the specific position requisition.
- Weekends/Holidays: No standard weekend rotation. For holiday weeks, agency staff can choose to work 4 (10-hour) shifts or take the holiday unpaid.
On-Call Requirements
Must maintain a 30-minute response time for General/Neuro/Ortho. The schedule is tracking an 8-week rotation:
- AM Staff: 8–10 End of Shift (EOS) slots, 1–2 night slots (2230–0700), and 1–2 call weekends.
- PM Staff: 5–10 night slots (2230–0700) and 1–2 call weekends.
- Note: No call rooms are available on-site.
Floating & Orientation
- Orientation: 1 to 1.5 weeks (dependent on team assignment and shift).
- Floating: Cross-trained to the General Main OR specialty and the Urology Center. No floating to outside hospitals or external alternative sites.
Perquisites & Logistics
- Scrubs: Surgical scrubs are provided by the hospital. Personal scrub caps are allowed but must be covered by a hospital-issued surgical bouffant.
- Parking: Free parking is provided with an active shuttle service to and from the parking structure.
- On-Campus Amenities: Starbucks and Cafeteria available.
