Phlebotomist – VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System
Location: Reno, Nevada
Facility: VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS)
Department: Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS)
Contract Type: Long-Term Federal Contract
Duration: Base Year + 4 Option Years (Up to 5 Years Total)
Positions Available: 6 Full-Time Phlebotomists
Start Date: Tentatively July 2026 (Pending Credentialing)
Credentialing Timeline: 8–10 Weeks
Position Overview
The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System is seeking experienced and certified Phlebotomists to provide comprehensive phlebotomy and specimen processing services within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS). This long-term federal contract offers the opportunity to support veteran healthcare services in a professional laboratory environment.
Candidates will perform blood collection, specimen processing, patient identification, accessioning, and laboratory support duties while adhering to VA, CLIA, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards.

Overtime, weekend, holiday, and rotating shift coverage may be required based on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and STAT venipuncture using vacutainer, syringe, and butterfly techniques
- Collect blood specimens through venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures
- Properly identify patients and verify laboratory test orders
- Process, label, centrifuge, package, and transport specimens according to established protocols
- Collect and process urine specimens and provide patient collection instructions
- Accession specimens and accurately enter collection information into laboratory systems
- Deliver specimens to designated laboratory departments and reference laboratories
- Operate pneumatic tube systems and manage specimen routing
- Maintain phlebotomy supply inventory and restock materials as needed
- Perform routine equipment checks and preventive maintenance
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and safety standards
- Follow all infection control, OSHA, CLIA, and Joint Commission requirements
- Complete all required VA training and compliance requirements
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Nationally recognized or state-recognized Phlebotomy Certification
- Recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital, clinic, laboratory, or healthcare setting
- Strong specimen collection and processing experience
- Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary collections on diverse patient populations
- Basic computer proficiency and electronic documentation experience
- Strong communication and patient service skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior Veterans Affairs (VA) experience
- Experience in hospital laboratory environments
- Knowledge of CLIA, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards
- Experience with specimen accessioning and laboratory information systems
