  • Mechanical ventilation and care of intubated patients
  • Oscillator ventilation management
  • OG/NG tube care
  • IV insertion
  • Central line management
  • Critical thinking in high-acuity settings

 

NICU Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Assignment

Department: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
Charting System: Allscripts

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Position Overview

This position is primarily based in a Level III NICU; however, nurses must be comfortable floating to the PICU, Pediatric Unit, and Nursery as needed. The Pediatric Unit cares for patients ranging from infancy through 21 years of age.

Unit Information

  • NICU Level: III
  • Bed Capacity: 40 beds
  • Patient Ratios:
    • Level I: 1:1 or 1:2
    • Level II: 1:3
    • Level III: 1:4

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

The unit cares for neonates and pediatric patients with a variety of complex conditions, including:

  • Prematurity
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Neonatal sepsis
  • Neonatal withdrawal syndrome
  • Congenital anomalies
  • Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)
  • Post-surgical transfers
  • Cardiology patients

 

First-time travelers are welcome to apply.

Medication & Drip Management

  • Nurses are not routinely required to titrate drips.
  • Common medications include Dopamine and Dobutamine.
  • Sedation drips are not typically utilized.

Staffing & Support

  • Charge nurses may occasionally carry a low-acuity patient assignment.
  • Day shift support includes two nurse aides.
  • Staffing assignments generally include one nurse per room, with main rooms housing approximately 12–16 infants.

Physician Coverage

  • House staff and attending physicians are available onsite 24/7.
  • Neonatologists are on call overnight and conduct rounds each morning.

Respiratory Equipment

The unit utilizes:

  • NCPAP
  • Bubble CPAP
  • NIMV
  • High-Flow Oxygen Therapy
  • Oscillator Ventilation

Telemetry

  • Telemetry monitoring is available.
  • No dedicated monitor technicians.
  • RNs are responsible for interpreting telemetry strips.

Scheduling

  • Shift Hours: 7:00 AM–7:30 PM / 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
  • Schedule: 13 shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Scheduling requests are considered whenever possible, though flexibility is expected to support unit needs.
  • Block scheduling is not guaranteed.
  • Attendance expectations are strict, and excessive call-outs may result in contract termination.

Weekend & Holiday Requirements

  • Every other weekend required
  • Typically one holiday per contract, depending on unit needs

Overtime & Call

  • No routine call requirement
  • Overtime opportunities may be available

Floating Requirements

Nurses may be assigned to:

  • PICU
  • Pediatric Unit
  • Nursery

Core staff generally attend deliveries; travelers may support these areas based on unit needs.

Dress Code

  • Royal blue scrubs required
  • Scrub card and surgical scrubs may be provided when appropriate

Orientation

Orientation includes:

  • Two days in the NICU
  • One day in the Nursery
  • One day in the PICU
