  • Job Title: Clinical Nurse Educator - Maternal Child Health (MCH)
  • Term: 13-Week Long Term Assignment (LTA)
  • Shift: 07:00 – 15:30 (Day Shift)
  • On-Call Requirement: No
  • Holiday/Weekend Requirement: Support as required by unit leadership during high-census periods

Role & Clinical Overview:

 

The Clinical Educator for Maternal Child Health is a dual leadership and clinical support role. This position is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the clinical orientation process for all new MCH employees, as well as directing ongoing continuing education for established staff.

Note: This position assumes active registry nurse responsibilities on the MCH floor and is expected to provide direct patient care during periods of high unit census or inadequate staffing as directed by department leadership.

 

Key Responsibilities & Educator Scope

  • Orientation Oversight: Coordinate and manage the onboarding process for all new MCH personnel. Provide structured written progress updates at 30-day and 60-day intervals in preparation for the formal 90-day introductory evaluation.
  • Audit & Survey Readiness: Maintain comprehensive, highly organized educational checklists and competency documentation for all MCH staff in preparation for Joint Commission and Department of Health (DOH) surveys.
  • Continuous Staff Training: Educate and update clinical staff on protocol updates, new equipment, and procedural changes through the development of tailored educational materials and references.
  • Life Support Instruction: Provide NRP training and coordinate annual CPR/ACLS competency programs for the MCH team.
  • Skills Days & Mock Drills: Coordinate the annual unit skills day and manage staff attendance records. Design and execute clinical drills targeting high-risk procedures, scheduling them across various shifts to reach the majority of the staff.
  • Equipment & Tech Integration: Act as the department point person for new product evaluations, equipment recalls, troubleshooting, and trials. Collaborate closely with Bioengineering and Information Services (IS) for system or IT implementations.
  • Clinical Floor Support: Step in to assist with direct floor nursing and patient care during peak census or staffing shortages.

Unit Description & Specifications

 

The specialized maternal-child health wing features a state-of-the-art layout designed for family-centered care:

  • Layout: 6 Labor and Delivery (L&D) Rooms, 2 Labor Triage Rooms, 11 Postpartum Rooms.
  • Neonatal Care: A Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) featuring 4 single-family NICU rooms for individualized infant care.
  • Surgical Suites: A dedicated Cesarean Section Surgical Operating Room and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) located directly within the L&D suite.
  • Cross-Training: Unit staff are postpartum trained and cross-trained to L&D, NICU, or both.

Position Requirements

 

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) is required; a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education (MSN) is highly preferred.
  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 5 years of recent, strong clinical experience in Maternal Child Health nursing.
  • Clinical Competence: Must demonstrate Core II competencies in all areas of the MCH department.
  • Communication & Admin Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, alongside strong computer proficiency.

Licensure & Certifications

  • State Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New York.
  • Required Certifications: Active BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time as required for administrative and direct patient care tasks.
  • Repetitive use of hands/fingers (computer keyboard entry) and ability to perform light lifting associated with standard patient care.
