Position Highlights

  • Department: Interventional Radiology (IR)
  • Role: RN Manager / Traveler RN
  • Unit Manager experience required 2 years as RN IR
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Critical care experience preferred but not required
  • Minimum 1 year IR experience
  • Strong IV-start skills required
  • Comfortable with procedural sedation and patient monitoring

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS (required for all travelers, pediatric experience not required)

Unit Overview

  • 1 IR suite
  • Shared vascular procedures in Cath Lab
  • 7 RN staff members
  • Average volume:
    • 5–8 IR procedures/day
    • ~50 CT prep/IV-start patients/day

Common Procedures

Interventional Radiology

  • Biopsies (breast, thyroid, CT-guided, ultrasound-guided)
  • Embolizations (bleeding, fibroids, tumors)
  • Thrombectomies for:
    • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
    • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Drain placements:
    • Abscesses
    • Pleural effusions
    • Joint collections
    • Paracentesis
  • Pain management injections
  • Vascular access:
    • PICCs
    • Ports
    • Permcaths
    • Tunneled catheters
  • Fistula interrogations

CT/MRI Responsibilities

  • IV starts (adult and pediatric)
  • Sedation monitoring
  • Oral contrast preparation
  • Pacemaker patient monitoring

Nursing Responsibilities

  • Pre-, intra-, and post-procedure patient care
  • Patient assessments and documentation
  • Care coordination with physicians and advanced practice providers
  • IV insertion and CT prep
  • Radiology flow sheet documentation

 

EMR

  • Allscripts
  • Combination of electronic and paper documentation depending on procedure

Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts
    • 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
    • Some 7:00 PM starts
  • Typical breaks:
    • 1-hour lunch
    • Two 15-minute breaks
  • Scheduling is flexible but not guaranteed block scheduling

Call Requirements

  • No call
  • No weekend call
  • No holiday call (covered by permanent staff)

Floating

  • No formal floating
  • May assist in Cath Lab for IR-specific cases only

Staffing & Support

  • IR Chair and physician coverage onsite during day
  • Additional physician on staff
  • Charge nurse coordinates workflow and may take patients as needed
  • CST and IR Tech support available during procedures

Orientation

  • 3 orientation shifts
  • Additional support available if needed
  • Competency assessed by manager

Scrubs

  • Royal Blue
  • Cath Lab: surgical scrubs or disposable scrubs permitted
