Shift Notes  2 years  (Medical Surgical)

7p-7a, weekends as needed, first to float 

Position Overview

• Unit: MedSurg – 6th Floor
• Beds: 42
• Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
• Required Certification: BLS
• EMR: Epic experience required
• Experience Required: Minimum 2 years of MedSurg experience

Patient Population

Primarily medical patients, including:

• Respiratory conditions
• Gastrointestinal disorders
• General medical diagnoses
• Behavioral health patients awaiting discharge planning
• Limited surgical overflow

Required Skills

• Strong MedSurg background
• Epic charting experience
• Ability to independently read and interpret telemetry strips
• Willingness to:
  • Precept new travelers
  • Work with nursing students

Drips & Monitoring

• No titration of drips required
• Common drips:
  • Heparin
  • PCA pumps
  • Morphine drips
• Telemetry:
  • Virtual monitor technicians
  • Nurses interpret their own strips
  • Transitioning from SpaceLabs to Philips monitoring system

Support Staff

• Charge nurse on every shift
• Day shift ADT nurse assists with admissions, discharges, and tasks
• Patient care technicians available (approximately 1 tech for every 8 patients)
• Respiratory Therapy manages:
  • CPAP
  • BiPAP
  • High-flow oxygen

Scheduling

• 12-hour shifts: 7:00–7:30
• No block scheduling
• Scheduler assigns traveler schedules
• Weekend requirement:
  • 5 weekend shifts every 6 weeks
• Holiday coverage required if needed

Floating Expectations

Must be willing to float to:

• MedSurg 5
• Other comparable units within the health system
• Boise Medical Center
• Nampa Medical Center
• ER holds/overflow areas as needed

Orientation

• 3 days general orientation
  • Epic training
  • Educator meetings
  • Online modules
• 2 unit shifts with a preceptor

Dress Code

• Any scrub color
• Must be clean and profession
