Description

A Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) at Blackfeet Community Hospital is responsible for performing diagnostic laboratory procedures that help physicians diagnose, monitor, and treat patients.

Key responsibilities typically include:

  • Performing laboratory testing in areas such as:
    • Hematology
    • Clinical chemistry
    • Microbiology
    • Blood bank
    • Serology
    • Urinalysis
    • Coagulation testing
  • Collecting and processing patient specimens, including:
    • Venipuncture (blood draws)
    • Capillary punctures
    • Urine, stool, throat, and other specimen collection
    • Proper labeling and preparation of samples
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment such as:
    • Microscopes
    • Centrifuges
    • Automated analyzers
    • Blood gas and molecular testing systems
  • Performing quality control and calibration procedures to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and reporting laboratory results accurately and promptly to healthcare providers.
  • Maintaining laboratory documentation and records in systems such as LIS, EHR, RPMS, or VistA.
  • Following safety, infection control, HIPAA, CLIA, and CAP compliance standards to maintain a safe laboratory environment.
  • Collaborating with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Supporting 24/7 hospital laboratory operations, which may include weekends, holidays, evenings, or on-call shifts. 

Typical qualifications include:

  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science
  • ASCP or AMT certification
