Registered Nurse (RN) – Surgical Services

Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Surgical Services team. The RN will provide comprehensive perioperative patient care throughout the surgical experience, including pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe and positive patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care throughout the surgical process.
• Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative nursing care and patient education.
• Administer medications and treatments in accordance with established policies and nursing standards.
• Coordinate patient care across departments and serve as a patient advocate.
• Monitor patient condition before, during, and after surgical procedures.
• Maintain a safe surgical environment by adhering to sterile technique and infection prevention standards.
• Assist with patient positioning, preparation, IV insertion, Foley catheter placement, and other perioperative procedures.
• Anticipate surgical team needs by preparing equipment, supplies, and sterile fields.
• Assist anesthesia providers during induction and emergence.
• Monitor operating room personnel and environment for compliance with aseptic practices.
• Accurately document patient care and surgical activities.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and promote patient safety.
• Reprocess equipment when assigned to Endoscopy services.

Qualifications

Required

• Active RN license in the state of practice or Compact RN License.
• Current BLS certification.
• Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Preferred

• BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
• ACLS and/or PALS certification.
• CNOR certification.
• SGNA certification.
• Completion of an OR internship program.
• Minimum of 2 years of Critical Care or Operating Room experience.

Skills & Knowledge

• Knowledge of perioperative nursing standards, AORN guidelines, and sterile processing practices.
• Experience maintaining sterile fields and adhering to infection control standards.
• Ability to prioritize patient care and respond effectively to changing clinical situations.
• Strong teamwork, leadership, and patient advocacy skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
• Ability to remain calm and effective during emergencies and high-pressure situations.

Work Environment

• Fast-paced surgical setting with varying patient acuity levels.
• Exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and surgical equipment.
• Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and patient transport.
• Exposure to bright lights, high noise levels, and occasional interruptions.
• Ability to work effectively during periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
