13-Week Contract | Days | 40 Hours/Week
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Registered Nurse for a 13-week travel assignment with a high-volume surgical services department. This role is ideal for a nurse with extensive cardiac surgery experience who is comfortable circulating complex cardiovascular procedures while collaborating with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and interdisciplinary care teams.
The Surgical Services RN delivers patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing interventions while serving as a patient advocate and coordinating care throughout the perioperative experience.
Contract Details
- 13-week travel assignment
- 40 hours per week
- Day shift: Monday–Friday
- Typical hours: 6:30 AM–3:00 PM
- Occasional 5:30 AM start times based on surgical schedule
- On-call required
- Approximately 10–12 call shifts every 6 weeks
- 1–2 weekends and 1–2 weekday call shifts every 6 weeks
- 30-minute response time required when on call
- Travel candidates only; local candidates are not eligible
Unit Information
- Dedicated cardiovascular operating rooms, including a hybrid operating room
- Average daily caseload: 2–6 procedures
- Approximately 6 cardiac surgeries per week
- Procedures include:
- CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting)
- TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement)
- Thoracic surgery
- Pericardial window procedures
- VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
- Open heart procedures
- General surgery cases as needed
- CVOR nurses may be required to circulate general surgical procedures when necessary
Essential Responsibilities
- Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments throughout the perioperative process
- Analyze assessment findings and develop individualized plans of care
- Implement and evaluate nursing interventions and treatment effectiveness
- Administer medications safely in accordance with state regulations and facility policies
- Coordinate patient care across multiple departments and disciplines
- Serve as a patient safety advocate and participate in quality improvement initiatives
- Delegate tasks appropriately based on staff competency, licensure, and scope of practice
- Manage nursing care within the operating room environment
- Coordinate the needs of the surgical team to ensure efficient case progression
- Observe surgical procedures from a broad perspective while maintaining patient safety and comfort
- Provide pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative nursing care
- Complete patient assessments before, during, and after surgical procedures
- Deliver patient and family education, including discharge instructions when appropriate
- Anticipate the needs of surgeons and scrub personnel
- Open sterile supplies and equipment while maintaining sterile technique
- Operate and troubleshoot surgical equipment as needed
- Maintain accurate patient and procedural documentation
- Monitor operating room personnel for adherence to aseptic practices
- Assist with gowning and draping procedures
- Support patient positioning and safe transport
- Assist anesthesia providers during induction and emergence
- Insert and manage Foley catheters, IVs, and other perioperative procedures as needed
- Ensure availability and readiness of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies
Required Qualifications
- Active RN license in applicable state or compact state
- Minimum 2 years of recent CVOR/cardiac surgery experience
- Minimum 1–2 years of general operating room experience
- BLS certification (AHA)
- ACLS certification (AHA)
- NIH Stroke Scale certification
- Successful completion of Dysrhythmia Assessment
- Strong knowledge of sterile field maintenance and sterilization guidelines
- Ability to meet on-call response requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous travel nursing experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- CNOR certification
- Critical Care experience
- Completion of an OR internship program
- Additional perioperative specialty training

Working Environment
This role requires working in a fast-paced surgical setting where periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. Team members may be exposed to:

- Chemical agents, cleaning solutions, and sterilization products
- Frequent interruptions and rapidly changing priorities
