Unit Overview

• Specialty: Med/Surg
• Unit: 5S
• Ratios: Typically 1:5–6 (may occasionally reach 1:7)
• EMR: Epic
• Shifts: 7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
• Weekend Requirement: Every Other Weekend
• Scrub Color: Royal Blue

Required Certifications

✅ BLS

Required Skills

• Med/Surg experience
• Telemetry interpretation
• EKGs
• Care of CHF and COPD patients
• Cardiac patient management
• IV medication administration
• Comfortable with admissions and discharges

Common Patient Diagnoses

• CHF
• Cardiac Cath patients
• Chest Pain
• Pneumonia
• Chronic Renal Disease
• COPD
• Orthopedic patients
• Oncology patients (Chemo administered by permanent staff)

Telemetry

• Phillips monitoring system
• Monitor Techs available
• RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry strips

Respiratory Support

• CPAP
• BiPAP
• RT available 24/7
• RNs perform aerosols for non-vented patients

Support Staff

• Charge Nurse on every unit
• CNAs available on all shifts
• IV Team available:
  • Weekdays until 10 PM
  • Weekends until 3:30 PM
• In-house Pharmacy 24/7

Floating

• May float to other Med/Surg units
• If floated to Critical Care, traveler will only take Med/Surg or Stepdown-level patients

Orientation

• 1–2 shifts with a preceptor

Ideal Candidate

Looking for a Med/Surg RN with telemetry experience who is comfortable reading strips, managing cardiac and respiratory patients, performing EKGs, and working in a traveler-friendly environment with occasional floating. Epic experience is highly preferred.
