Unit Notes
Attention: 4 hours of billable computer modules are required by 7:00 AM on the Friday prior to start. Modules are delivered Monday–Tuesday of the week before start date. The 4 hours should be added to the first week's timesheet.
Accepts local clinicians.
EPIC experience required — facility is undergoing an EPIC conversion in Q2 2026.
Unit Information
- Unit: Med Surg/Telemetry – Inpatient Surgical (3rd Floor)
- Beds: 48 (across two buildings)
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- Nights: 1:4–6
- Days: 1:5–6
- LPNs available.
- Virtual admission and discharge nurses available to assist.
- Primary care nursing model is frequently used; candidates must be comfortable with this model.
Required Certifications
- BLS
- NIHSS
Common Diagnoses / Patient Population
- Neuro: laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI
- General surgery: ostomies, hernia repairs
- Orthopedics: total hip and total knee replacements
- PICC lines, TPN, lipids
- Fem-pop bypass procedures
- Dialysis catheter insertions
- BKA, AKA
- Diabetes patients
- Dialysis unit located on the 3rd floor
- PCA pumps
- Some epidurals
- IV antibiotics
- Chronic pain management (narcotics)
- Sepsis
- Urgent OR cases
Required Experience / Skills
- Total joint experience required
- Surgical experience required
- Minimum 1 year of experience
- Understanding of:
- PCA pumps
- Reversal drugs (Narcan)
- Sepsis management
- TPN/Lipids
- Narcotic administration and monitoring
Drips
- RN titration required: Heparin
- Common drips: Titrated per protocol
Telemetry
- Telemetry monitor technician available for monitoring
- RNs are responsible for strip interpretation
- Monitor system: Draeger
Charge Nurse / House Supervisor
- Day shift charge nurse is usually a Blessing staff nurse
- Nights may be covered by the house supervisor
- Charge nurses carry a smaller assignment to provide support
Nurse Aides
- CNAs available
- CNAs may be pulled to serve as sitters
- Greater CNA need on night shift
Respiratory Support / Equipment
- CPAP (home units)
- Airvo (possible)
- BiPAP occasionally; patients remain on the unit
- RT manages respiratory equipment
Scheduling
- Three 12-hour shifts beginning at 7:00
- Block scheduling not guaranteed
- Scheduling requests may be discussed with leadership
- Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance
Weekend Requirement
- Every other weekend
- Saturday and Sunday for both day and night shifts
Holiday Requirement
- Participates in holiday rotation with core staff
Call / Standby
- None
Floating
- Float to like units only
- If floated to a higher-acuity unit, traveler functions as a helper/resource and does not take a patient assignment
Dress Code
- Black scrubs
Orientation
- First day: 12–14 hours for competencies, computer-based learning modules, and general orientation
- One 12-hour shift orientation on the hired shift and unit
