Travel RN – Postpartum / Mother-Baby (Couplet Care)

Shift: Nights | 36 Hours/Week

3x12 shifts

Location: Mechanicsville, VA 23116

Contract Length: 13 Weeks

Start Date: July 6, 2026

Position Summary

The Obstetrics (OB) Registered Nurse (RN) provides women-, newborn-, and family-centered care in the postpartum setting. The RN is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for mothers and newborns while collaborating with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to achieve the best maternal and neonatal outcomes.

The nurse will provide care for postpartum mothers and newborns, perform ongoing assessments, educate patients and families, administer medications, coordinate care, and advocate for patient safety and quality outcomes.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and ongoing patient assessments
  • Analyze assessment data and develop individualized plans of care
  • Educate patients and families regarding postpartum and newborn care
  • Implement nursing interventions and evaluate patient outcomes
  • Collaborate with Care Management, transfer centers, pharmacy, and other interdisciplinary team members
  • Administer medications safely in accordance with nursing standards and state regulations
  • Coordinate care across hospital departments
  • Serve as a patient safety advocate and participate in quality improvement initiatives
  • Apply evidence-based obstetrical and women's health nursing practices
  • Provide care to women during pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, and other women's health conditions
  • Care for neonates from birth through discharge with varying gestational ages, diagnoses, and complications
  • Provide triage, prioritization, assessment, education, stabilization, resuscitation, and emergency management when needed
  • Model cultural competence, patient safety, and high-quality care standards

Unit Information

Unit: Couplet Care / Mother-Baby Unit

Patient Population Includes:

  • High-acuity maternal/newborn couplets
  • Patients with language barriers
  • Patients with substance use disorders
  • Chronic conditions affecting pregnancy
  • HELLP syndrome and other pregnancy-related complications

Required Skills:

  • Experience caring for high-acuity maternal/newborn couplets
  • Postpartum and newborn assessment and care
  • Monitoring using Toco/US fetal monitoring
  • Attending low-risk deliveries
  • "Catching" and transitioning newborns
  • Management of patients with substance use disorder and chronic pregnancy-related conditions
  • Breastfeeding support and education
  • Teaching self-care, newborn care, discharge planning, and follow-up care

Required Certifications

  • Active RN License (state license or compact license)
  • BLS Certification
  • NRP Certification

Preferred Certifications

  • ACLS
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification
  • Inpatient OB Certification
  • Maternal Newborn Nursing Certification
  • Low Risk Neonatal Nursing Certification
  • Care of the Extremely Low Birth Weight Neonate Certification

Experience Requirements

Required:

  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience

Preferred:

  • Recent OB, Emergency Department, or Critical Care experience
  • Travel nursing experience
  • Antepartum training
  • Epic EMR experience

Equipment Used

  • Toco/US GE fetal monitoring system
  • Infusion pumps, including epidural pumps
  • Newborn warmers
  • GE monitoring equipment
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Blood glucose monitoring equipment

Schedule & Additional Requirements

  • Night Shift
  • No Call
  • Every other weekend required
  • Major holiday rotation required
  • Floating may be required within the Women's Life Department
  • NICU floating limited to feeder/grower assignments only
  • No local candidates (must reside outside a 50-mile radius)
  • Interview required prior to offer

Working Environment

This position may involve periods of high stress, fluctuating workloads, frequent interruptions, exposure to infectious materials, bright lights, high noise levels, and emergency situations. Nurses are expected to follow all infection prevention and safety protocols while providing compassionate, relationship-based care.
