Description
Oncology Nursing Competencies
- Skilled in IV therapy, infusions, phlebotomy, peripheral IV insertion, venipuncture, and port access/management.
- Experienced in identifying and managing oncologic emergencies, including tumor lysis syndrome, hemorrhage, increased intracranial pressure, and spinal cord compression.
- Proficient in symptom management, including nausea/vomiting, pain, neuropathy, constipation/diarrhea, dysphagia, skin and mucosal changes, and altered mental status.
- Knowledgeable in oncology medications, including antiemetics, corticosteroids, opioids, and monitoring medication side effects.
- Experienced in chemotherapy administration and monitoring, oral chemotherapy education, and recognizing/reporting abnormal lab values.
- Familiar with radiation oncology treatments and safety precautions, including palliative and advanced radiation therapies.
- Strong background in patient assessment, wound care, nutritional evaluation, psychosocial support, and advance care planning.
- Demonstrates expertise in interdisciplinary communication, physician notification, isolation precautions/PPE, prescription coordination, and tracheostomy care.
- Experienced in outpatient oncology settings, with exposure to inpatient, pediatric, and radiation oncology environments.
