Travel Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech) – Operating Room

Location: Puyallup, WA
Shift: 12-Hour Days | Variable Start Times (6:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 10:30 AM)
Duration: 13 Weeks
Facility: Acute Care Hospital | Level III Trauma Center
Start Date: ASAP
 

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech) for a travel assignment at a busy Level III Trauma Center in Puyallup, Washington. The ideal candidate will have strong acute care operating room experience and be proficient in orthopedic, spine, sports medicine, and robotic surgical procedures. This role requires flexibility, teamwork, reliability, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced surgical environment.

Facility Information

  • Level III Trauma Center
  • 375 Licensed Beds
  • 12 Operating Rooms (11 running daily, 1 Hybrid OR)
  • Approximately 40–50 surgical cases per day
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Required

Responsibilities

  • Prepare operating rooms with appropriate instruments, equipment, implants, and sterile supplies.
  • Establish and maintain sterile fields throughout surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and efficiently pass instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery.
  • Perform surgical counts in collaboration with nursing staff.
  • Assist with patient positioning, draping, and room turnover.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and infection prevention standards.
  • Ensure surgical instruments and equipment are functioning properly prior to procedures.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and perioperative team members to promote safe patient care.
  • Document and communicate procedural information according to facility standards.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of recent acute care/inpatient Operating Room experience.
  • Previous travel experience required.
  • Strong recent experience in:
    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Total Joint Procedures
    • Sports Medicine
    • Spine Surgery
    • Robotic Surgery (Da Vinci preferred)
  • Experience scrubbing the following procedures:
    • General Surgery
    • Orthopedics
    • Spine
    • ENT (including Thyroid procedures)
    • Gynecology
    • Vascular (AV Fistulas, Fem-Pops)
    • Urology
    • Podiatry
  • Minimal Pediatric ENT experience preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Robotic Mazor experience
  • Da Vinci Xi robotic system experience
  • Experience in high-volume surgical environments

Requirements

  • Active Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration required.
  • BLS Certification required.
  • CST Certification preferred but not required by Washington State.
  • Strong scrub experience in the listed specialties required.
  • Epic experience preferred.

Scheduling & Call Requirements

  • Must be available to work any day of the week based on department needs.
  • Variable shift start times based on scheduling needs.
  • Occasional weekend shifts may be required.
  • On-call requirement: 4–6 call shifts per 6-week schedule period.
  • Call may include nights and weekends.
  • Required response time: 30 minutes.
  • No sleep rooms available.

Floating Expectations

When low census occurs in the Operating Room, travelers may float to support:

  • Medical Surgical Units
  • ICU
  • PCU
  • PACU
  • ED Holding
  • Emergency Department

While floating:

  • No patient assignments
  • No medication administration
  • Function as helping hands/task support
  • Vital signs
  • Stocking supplies
  • Sitter duties
  • Basic support tasks within scope of practice

Orientation

  • Hospital New Employee Orientation
  • Epic training provided during onboarding
  • Unit-specific orientation during first week

Additional Information

  • Scrubs provided by facility
  • No personal phones permitted on the unit
  • Breaks are required during all shifts
