Travel RN – Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
Position Overview
- Location: Milwaukee, WI
- Facility Type: 933-Bed, Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, Magnet-Designated, Comprehensive Stroke Center
- Unit: CVICU (7T) – 30 Beds
- Shift: 12-Hour Night Shift (1900–0700) | 36 Hours/Week
- Schedule Cycle: 6-week schedule (released 1–2 weeks prior)
- Interview Process: SimpliFi Clinical Interview Required
Compensation & Logistics
- On-Call: None
- Weekend Rotation: Every 3rd weekend
- Holidays: 1–2 holidays per contract
- Requested Time Off (RTO): Up to 7 days pre-approved
- Fatigue Policy: Strictly enforces a maximum of 60 hours/week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts.
- Scrubs: Any solid, professional color (no graphics, logos, or designs).
- Parking: Free. Night shift utilizes the attached parking structure.
Job Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of ICU experience, including at least 1 year of dedicated CVICU experience.
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted if experience criteria are met.
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS required. CCRN is highly preferred.
- Systems: Profiled proficiency in EPIC EMR is required.
Clinical Profile & Skills
Common Diagnoses & Patient Types
- Cardiac: Immediate post-op CABG, TAVR/TMVR, valve repairs/replacements, heart transplants, and epicardial/transvenous pacemakers.
- Thoracic: Fresh post-op esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, and lobectomy.
- Vascular: Fresh post-op AAA, TVAR, and carotid endarterectomy.
Required Skillsets
- High proficiency in invasive line monitoring (Swan Ganz, A-lines), chest tubes, ventilator/trach management, and advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation.
- Mastery of cardiac medications (inotropes, vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics).
- Line Draws: RNs must draw out of invasive lines; phlebotomy handles peripheral sticks.
- Preferred Surgical Experience: ECMO, CVVH, IABP, and VAD.
Staffing Ratios
- RN: 1:1 to 1:2 for regular ICU status; up to 1:3 for mixed status.
- Tech: 1:8–10
Department Support & Technology
- 24/7 On-Site Providers: Dedicated CVICU Intensivist, General Intensivist, Hospitalist, and ICU-designated Respiratory Therapists. CT Surgeon is on call 24/7.
- Unit Support: Charge Nurse (rarely takes a patient assignment) and HUC available 24/7.
- Monitoring: Bedside and nurse station telemetry (no separate tele tech).
- Hardware: Alaris IV Pumps, Pyxis Medication Dispensing.
Floating & Orientation
- Orientation: 1 Day total (includes 2–4 hours of NEO with a supervisor/educator, followed by 1-on-1 unit orientation with a preceptor).
- Floating Requirements: Must be willing to float to ED Holding, other ICUs (MRICU, SICU, CICU, Neuro ICU), MSU (1:3 ratio), PACU Surge, or function as a Sitter.
