L&D RN – Labor & Delivery

- Annual Deliveries: Approximately 950–1,000 births/year
- Patient Population: High-Risk Obstetrics
Unit Overview
This is a high-risk Labor & Delivery unit caring for a wide variety of obstetric patients including:
- Preeclampsia
- HELLP Syndrome
- Placenta Previa
- Preterm Labor (PTL)
- Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM)
- Other high-risk maternal/fetal conditions
The facility follows AWHONN staffing guidelines.
Important Unit Expectations
✅ Agency nurses must float between:
- Labor & Delivery
- Mother/Baby Unit (MBU)
- Antepartum
✅ L&D nurses perform:
- Labor management
- Delivery recovery
- Maternal recovery
- Newborn recovery
Required Skills
Candidates should have experience with:
- High-risk Labor & Delivery
- Antepartum patients
- Mother/Baby care
- Fetal monitoring
- Newborn recovery
- Postpartum care
Drip Experience
Required Drips
- Oxytocin (Pitocin)
- Insulin
Must be comfortable titrating both.
Staffing & Support
Charge Nurse
- Charge RN is generally free from patient assignments.
- Acts as second nurse for deliveries.
OB Tech Support
- Typically 1 OB Tech per shift.
Provider Coverage
- OB Provider in-house 24/7
- MFM available on-call
- Neonatologist available as needed
- Anesthesia in-house 24/7
Monitoring & Charting
EFM System
- Corometric EFM
- Cerner/Fetalink
Telemetry
- Telemetry staff monitor strips if needed.
- L&D nurses are not primary telemetry readers.
Scheduling
- Manager-created schedules
- Works closely with travelers when possible
- Block scheduling has been accommodated previously
Weekend Requirement
- Every 3rd weekend
- Every other weekend possible if requesting block scheduling
Holiday Requirement
- As needed
Call Requirement
- No call
- No standby
Floating Requirements
May float to:
- Antepartum
- Mother/Baby Unit
- Patient sitter assignments throughout hospital
May float to:
- NICU (only if trained and comfortable)

- Facility provides hospital scrubs
