RN – Progressive Care Unit (PCU) | Travel Assignment
Facility Information
- Facility Size: 58 licensed beds
- Trauma Level: None
- Radius Rule: Traveler's permanent residence must be at least 50 miles from the facility.
Unit Details
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Beds: 33
- Experience Required: Minimum 18 months of PCU experience
- First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Patient Population
This is a combined PCU/Med-Surg unit caring for patients with:
- Stroke rule-outs
- Cellulitis
- Failure to Thrive (FTT)
- Altered Mental Status (AMS)
- Chest Pain rule-outs
- Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib)
- COPD
- Other medical and progressive care diagnoses
Staffing & Ratios
- RN: 1:5–1:6
- LPN: Primary patient assignments (same ratios as RN)
- CNA: 1:8–1:12
- Charge Nurse: Typically without a patient assignment
Required Licensure & Certifications
- Active RN License
- BLS
- ACLS
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
Required Skills
- Progressive care nursing experience
- Tracheostomy care
- Cardiac drip management
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- Chest tube management
- Blood product administration
- Wound care and dressing changes
- Central line management
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
Department Support
- CNA support for ADLs, vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, telemetry/Masimo monitoring, and admissions/discharges
- Health Unit Coordinator (primarily days)
- Charge Nurse
- Phlebotomy
- IV/Vascular Access Team
- Resource Nurse (staffing permitting)
- Respiratory Therapy (24/7)
- Hospitalist coverage (24/7; combination of in-person and virtual)
- Central telemetry monitoring
Equipment & Systems
- EMR: Epic
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Omnicell
- Telemetry: Philips
- Additional patient safety and positioning equipment available
Floating
- Required within scope of practice.
- May float to a nearby affiliated facility approximately 15–20 minutes away.
- Floating throughout Region 3 is required based on staffing needs.
- Paid travel time is provided if floating between facilities during a shift.
Orientation
- New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- 2 days of unit orientation
Schedule
- Shift: 12-hour Nights
- Hours: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Weekly Hours: 36
- Weekend Rotation: Every other weekend
- Clinical Interview: Yes
- On Call: None
- Low Census: Possible; travelers may be placed on low census and called back if needed
- Holiday Requirement: Travelers work 75% of holidays
- Schedule Cycle: Every 6 weeks
- RTO: Up to 6 days with manager approval (excluding holidays)

- Navy Blue scrubs
