Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical/Surgical Telemetry (Med Surg/Tele)
13-Week Travel Contract | Days | 36 Hours/Week
We're seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join a busy Medical/Surgical Telemetry unit at a short-term acute care hospital. This is an excellent opportunity for an RN with strong Med Surg/Tele experience who enjoys working with post-surgical and trauma patients in a collaborative, team-focused environment.
Schedule
- 13-week travel contract
- Day Shift
- 36 hours per week
- 12-hour shifts
- Every other weekend required
- Major holidays required
- 48-hour contracts may be considered
- Weekend-only blocked schedule may be accommodated
Requirements
- No local candidates (must live more than 50 miles from the facility)
- Minimum 1 year of recent acute care RN experience
- Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience
- Recent Medical/Surgical Telemetry experience required
- CAPD experience preferred
- EPIC experience preferred
- Must pass an EKG (Dysrhythmia) Exam during orientation (study guide available)
- Interview required
Certifications
- Current RN License (state or compact)
- BLS Certification required
- ACLS preferred at hire (required prior to direct patient care if applicable)
- CCRN preferred
- PCCN preferred
- NIH Stroke Certification preferred
Unit Details
- Medical/Surgical Telemetry Unit
- 30-bed unit (can flex up to 37 beds)
- Patient population includes:
- General surgery
- Trauma
- Minor orthopedic cases
- Post-operative patients
- Post-trauma patients
- Average length of stay: approximately 4 days
- Day shift nurses can expect approximately 1–2 patient discharges/admissions per shift
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio
- Typically 1:5–6
- Ratios may change based on patient census and hospital needs
Equipment & Clinical Skills
Experience with the following is preferred:
- Alaris IV pumps
- Hercules beds
- BiPAP
- CPAP
- Tracheostomies
- Chest tubes
- Tube feedings (Kangaroo pumps)
- Dysrhythmia interpretation
- Remote telemetry monitoring
- CAPD
Support Available
You'll work alongside a strong interdisciplinary team including:
- Monitor technicians (telemetry interpretation)
- Certified Nursing Assistants (1–2 per shift)
- Phlebotomy
- Sitters
- Charge nurses
- Rapid Response Team
Floating
- Required to float to other Medical/Surgical units as needed.
Responsibilities
As a Medical/Surgical Telemetry RN, you will:
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments and develop individualized care plans.
- Administer medications safely following hospital policies and nursing standards.
- Monitor patients with telemetry and recognize dysrhythmias.
- Care for post-operative, trauma, and medically complex patients.
- Manage patients requiring chest tubes, tracheostomies, BiPAP/CPAP, tube feedings, and other specialized interventions.
- Coordinate patient care with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Educate patients and families regarding treatments, medications, and discharge planning.
- Advocate for patient safety while participating in quality improvement initiatives.
- Respond quickly to changes in patient condition using sound clinical judgment.
- Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while following evidence-based nursing practice.

- Excellent assessment and critical thinking abilities
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patients
- Effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams
- Experience documenting in EPIC
- Knowledge of advanced respiratory support
- Ability to safely care for patients with complex medical needs
- Commitment to professional growth and evidence-based practice
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Working Environment
This position involves:
- Fast-paced acute care environment
- High patient acuity
- Frequent interruptions and changing priorities
- Exposure to infectious materials and body fluids
- Possible exposure to verbal abuse or combative patients
- Use of universal precautions and appropriate PPE
Physical Requirements
Candidates should be able to:
- Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 100 pounds with assistance when necessary
- Stand and walk for extended periods
- Bend, reach, kneel, and perform repetitive hand movements
- Safely maneuver patients
- Respond quickly during emergencies
- Distinguish colors, hear alarms, and maintain visual acuity

- Geriatric patients (65+ years)
