Travel RN – Med/Surg/Telemetry Float Pool

Position Summary

Join the Med/Surg/Telemetry Float Pool, providing coverage across multiple medical-surgical and telemetry units. Travelers should be comfortable floating between units, caring for telemetry patients, and working in a fast-paced acute care environment.

Submission Requirements

• 50-mile radius rule
• Valid (unexpired) Driver's License must be included with every submission

Float Pool Units

Most common assignments:

• 6N – 36 beds
• 7N – 29 beds

Additional float units:

• 4N – 36 beds
• 5S – 36 beds
• 6S – 36 beds
• Critical Care – 20 beds (appropriate assignments only)

Travelers report to the Clinical Coordinator's Office before each shift for their daily assignment.

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts
  • Days: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday)
• Holidays worked with the permanent staff rotation
• No call or standby requirement

Requirements

Experience

• Recent Med/Surg and Telemetry experience
• Ability to independently interpret cardiac rhythms
• Must successfully pass the facility's Cardiac Rhythm Exam

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS

Patient Ratios

• Typical: 1:5–6
• Occasionally up to 1:7 toward the end of a shift depending on census and patient acuity

Common Patient Population

• Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
• Chest Pain
• Cardiac Catheterization recovery
• Pneumonia
• COPD
• Chronic Renal Disease
• Orthopedic patients
• Oncology patients (chemotherapy administered by permanent staff only)

Clinical Skills

Must be comfortable with:

• Telemetry monitoring and rhythm interpretation
• General Med/Surg patient care
• Cardiac patient management

Drips

• No titratable drips
• Travelers are not required to titrate cardiac drips

Unit Resources

• Charge Nurse available on every unit
  • Day Charge: No patient assignment
  • Night Charge: May carry an assignment
• CNAs/PCTs available on all units
• Respiratory Therapy manages:
  • CPAP
  • BiPAP
• Telemetry:
  • Phillips monitoring system
  • Monitor Technicians available on most units
  • RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry strips

Floating Expectations

• Float among all six Med/Surg/Telemetry units as needed
• Usually assigned a "parent unit"
• Will receive only basic telemetry assignments within RN scope of practice
• No ICU-level titratable drip assignments

• Royal Blue Scrubs

Orientation

• 1–2 shifts with a preceptor
