Description
Travel RN – PCU / IMC / Med-Surg
Unit Overview
- Department: PCU / IMC / Med-Surg
- Beds: 12 PCU/IMC beds + 4 ICU-capable rooms
- Average Census: Approximately 8 patients
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- ICU: 1:3
- IMC/PCU: 1:3–4
- Med-Surg: 1:5
- Minimum of 2 RNs on the unit at all times.
- Team nursing model with RN + LPN caring for up to 7 patients together.
Required Experience
Must Have
- Minimum 1 year of PCU experience (Med-Surg/Telemetry alone is not sufficient)
OR - Prior ICU experience
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience
- Strong patient care and documentation skills
- Cerner EMR experience required

Leadership
- Charge Nurse typically carries a small patient assignment.
- Travelers may be asked to function as Charge Nurse.
- House Supervisor oversees both the ED and inpatient floor.
- Unit Manager is a former travel nurse.
Support Staff
- CNA support available.
- Approximately 1 CNA depending on census (generally when census exceeds 6 patients).
Telemetry
- Remote telemetry monitoring.
- RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting telemetry strips.
- Monitoring is performed remotely through Eau Claire.
Respiratory
- Ventilator patients are transferred to a higher level of care.
Scheduling
- Scheduler collaborates with staff for scheduling.
- Self-scheduling with manager balancing coverage.
- Travelers should remain flexible to fill staffing gaps.
- Block scheduling may be considered but is not guaranteed.
Weekend Requirement
- Every 3rd weekend
- Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Holiday Requirement
- Work 2 of the 3 major holidays
Call / Standby
- Yes
- Low census/standby rotation
- 45-minute response time
- Travelers willing to float (such as assisting in the ED) are less likely to be placed on standby.
Floating
- Floating is optional.
- If declining to float, the alternative may be being sent home without pay for those hours.
- May float to:
- Emergency Department for task assistance
- Care for ED hold patients
Dress Code
- Any solid-colored scrubs
Orientation
- 4 hours of computer-based training (CBT) and onboarding
- 8 hours of unit/floor orientation
