Travel RN – Med Tele (8N) | Candidate Screening Checklist

✅ Required Certification

• BLS

✅ Required Experience

• Acute care hospital RN experience
• Comfortable caring for medically complex patients
• Experience managing telemetry patients
• Experience managing and titrating IV drips
• Blood transfusion experience
• Preferred: Previous travel nursing experience

Not Required

• Oncology experience
• Chemotherapy certification/administration (handled by internal staff)

✅ Common Patient Population

• Oncology/Hematology
• General Medical
• GI Bleed
• Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
• DVT
• Sepsis
• CHF
• COPD
• Pneumonia
• Failure to Thrive (FTT)
• Weakness/Deconditioning

✅ IV Drips

Must be comfortable managing:

• Insulin
• Heparin
• Cardizem
• Nitro
• Amiodarone
• Octreotide
• Blood transfusions

✅ Unit Details

• Unit: 8N Med Tele
• Beds: 27

Patient Ratios

• Days/Evenings: 1:4–5
• Nights: 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 if short staffed)

✅ Telemetry

• Centralized Tele Techs monitor and interpret rhythms
• RN does not read strips independently
• RN must be telemetry-aware and recognize rhythm changes

✅ Respiratory Equipment

May care for patients using:

• CPAP
• BiPAP
• High Flow Oxygen

RT available 24/7.

✅ Support Staff

• Charge RN every shift
  • Modified assignment
  • Travelers may be asked to charge (especially nights) if comfortable
• House Supervisor 24/7
• CNAs
  • Days/Evenings: 1:7–9
  • Nights: up to 1:14

✅ Schedule

Days

• 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
• May occasionally work 11:00 AM – 11:30 PM or variable day/evening shifts

Nights

• 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
• Every other weekend (Friday–Sunday)
• Holiday rotation:
  • 2 of 3 winter holidays
  • Every other holiday during the rest of the year
• No call or standby

✅ Floating

Travelers are first to float:

• Other Med/Surg units
• Outside Med/Surg only as:
  • Patient observer
  • Helping hands/tasking
• Floating typically occurs in 4-hour increments

✅ Orientation

• 1 day hospital orientation/CBTs
• 1 precepted 12-hour floor shift
