Travel RN – Labor & Delivery (L&D) | Candidate Screening Checklist
✅ Required Certifications
- BLS
- NRP
✅ Required Experience
- Recent Labor & Delivery experience
- Comfortable managing high-risk OB patients
- Experience with:
- Preeclampsia
- HELLP Syndrome
- Placenta Previa
- Preterm Labor (PTL)
- PROM
- Labor induction/augmentation
- Able to recover both mother and newborn after delivery
- Comfortable floating to Mother/Baby (MBU) and Antepartum
- Experience titrating Oxytocin and Insulin drips
Important: This is NOT an LDRP unit. Travelers are expected to float between L&D, Mother/Baby, and Antepartum.
Unit Information
- Department: Labor & Delivery
- L&D Beds: 7
- C-Section ORs: 2
- Postpartum Beds: 17
- Annual Deliveries: Approximately 950–1,000 births/year
- Follows AWHONN staffing guidelines
Patient Population
High-risk obstetrics including:
- Preeclampsia
- HELLP Syndrome
- Placenta Previa
- Preterm Labor
- PROM
- Other routine and high-risk L&D patients
Delivery Responsibilities
The L&D RN is responsible for:
- Labor management
- Admit/Prep for C-sections
- Recovery after C-sections
- Recovery of both mother and baby
- Newborn care immediately after delivery
Note:
- RNs do not circulate in the OR for C-sections.
- There is no dedicated Newborn Nursery RN, so the L&D RN cares for both mom and baby during recovery.
IV Drips
Must be comfortable titrating:
- Oxytocin (Pitocin)
- Insulin
Support Staff
- Charge RN (typically assignment-free)
- 1 OB Tech per shift
- OB Provider in-house 24/7
- Anesthesia available 24/7
- Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) on call
- Neonatologist available when needed
Monitoring & Charting
- EFM System: Corometrics EFM with Cerner/Fetalink
- If telemetry is required, Telemetry staff interpret strips.
Scheduling
- Manager-created schedule
- Works with staff preferences when possible
- Block scheduling has been accommodated previously
Weekend Requirement
- Every 3rd weekend
- May work every other weekend if requesting block scheduling
Holiday Requirement
- As needed
Call
- No call or standby
Floating
May float to:
- Mother/Baby Unit
- Antepartum
- Patient sitter anywhere in the hospital
- NICU (only if trained and comfortable)
Dress Code
- Hospital-provided Purple scrubs
