Description
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct daily structured rounds on assigned inpatient units, including Med-Surg, Telemetry, ICU, L&D, or specialty areas.
- Engage patients and families using purposeful rounding techniques to assess:
- Pain management
- Comfort and safety
- Responsiveness of staff
- Understanding of care plan
- Discharge readiness
- Environmental concerns (cleanliness, noise, room comfort)
- Build rapport and establish trust with patients and families.
Service Recovery
- Identify patient dissatisfaction or barriers to care before escalation to formal complaints.
- Perform immediate service recovery interventions when possible.
- Escalate unresolved concerns to nurse leadership, physicians, social work, risk management, or patient relations.
- Document complaints, resolutions, and follow-up actions.
Clinical Escalation & Advocacy
- Recognize clinical concerns requiring urgent nursing intervention.
- Communicate patient needs or status changes to bedside nurses and providers.
- Advocate for timely resolution of delays in care, testing, transport, discharge, or medication administration.
Collaboration
- Partner with:
- Charge nurses
- Nurse managers
- Case managers
- Social workers
- Physicians/hospitalists
- Environmental services
- Dietary services
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and huddles as needed. Interdisciplinary rounding improves communication and reduces care gaps.
Quality & Reporting
- Collect rounding data and identify trends affecting patient satisfaction.
- Monitor unit-specific patient experience metrics including HCAHPS-related indicators:
- Nurse communication
- Staff responsiveness
- Discharge communication
- Cleanliness/quietness
- Provide leadership with recommendations for process improvement.
Education & Coaching
- Reinforce patient-centered communication best practices with staff.
- Support staff education around service excellence and compassionate communication.
- Assist in coaching teams on behaviors that improve patient satisfaction.
Required Qualifications
- Active California RN license
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred
- Minimum 3–5 years acute care nursing experience
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills
- Experience in patient advocacy, case management, utilization review, quality, or leadership preferred
- Excellent conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
- Knowledge of hospital workflows and regulatory standards
- Proficiency with EMR systems such as Epic
- Understanding of what HCAHPS is and why it is important to hospitals
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous leadership or charge nurse experience
- Experience with HCAHPS improvement initiatives
- Background in service recovery or patient relations
- Kaiser Permanente experience preferred
- Certification in patient experience, quality, or case management preferred
