Travel Med/Surg Telemetry Registered Nurse (RN)
Position Details
- Job Title: Med/Surg Telemetry Registered Nurse (RN)
- Facility: James Cancer Hospital
- Location: Columbus, Ohio
- Assignment Length: 13 Weeks
- Shift: 3 × 12-hour Days/Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM) Rotational
- Day/Night rotating contracts may also be available based on unit needs.
- Charting System: EPIC (Required)
- Medication System: Pyxis
Schedule
- Days/Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM) Rotational
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit requirements.
- Block scheduling is not available.
For Day/Night rotating contracts, travelers may be scheduled for days, nights, or a combination of both depending on staffing needs. Shift assignments are reviewed every four weeks, but changes are not guaranteed.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of current Acute Care Med/Surg Telemetry experience
- Acute care experience must be current and continuous within the past 12 months.
- Experience must be in the specialty for which the candidate is applying.
- EPIC charting experience is required.
- Current BLS Certification
- Travel experience is not required.
- Oncology experience is preferred but not required.
Unit Overview
This is a secure Corrections Health Unit that provides care for inmates from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections (ODRC).
- Locked unit with access controlled by Correctional Officers
- Correctional Officer to inmate ratio: 1:2
- Nurse-to-patient ratio:
- PCU: 1:3
- Medical-Surgical: 1:4–5
Nurses will care for both oncology and non-oncology patients in a secure environment.
Floating
- Required to float to other Medical-Surgical Oncology units within the James Cancer Tower as needed.
Patient Population
Patients may include:
- Active solid tumors
- Hematologic malignancies
- Oncology workups
- Post-operative oncology patients
- Patients with a history of cancer admitted for other medical conditions
- Medical diagnoses including:
- COPD
- CHF
- Sepsis
- Pneumonia
- Tumor Lysis Syndrome
- DIC
- Neutropenic Fever
- Abnormal laboratory findings
- Chemotherapy administration
Required Clinical Skills
Candidates should have experience with:
Medical-Surgical / Telemetry
- Telemetry monitoring
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Rapid Response/Code Team activation
IV Therapy & Vascular Access
- Blood product administration
- Central line care
- Peripheral IV care
- PICC line management
- Starting and maintaining IVs
- Phlebotomy
Respiratory Care
- CPAP/BiPAP
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
- Oxygen therapy
- Non-invasive airway management
- Tracheostomy care
Gastrointestinal
- Feeding tube care and management
Endocrine
- IV insulin protocols
Medications
- Heparin protocols
- Cardiac drips (non-titrating)
- Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA)
Renal
- Pre- and Post-Hemodialysis patient care
Preferred Skills
- Chemotherapy administration and monitoring
- Port access and management
- Insulin drip titration
- PCU/Stepdown experience
- Surgical drain management

- Previous corrections experience is not required.
- Nurses should be comfortable working in a secure correctional healthcare environment alongside Correctional Officers.
