Quick Summary – Labor & Delivery RN

• Specialty: Labor & Delivery (Birthing Center)
• Shift: 12-hour shifts (6:45 AM–7:15 PM or 6:45 PM–7:15 AM)
• Unit: Secure, locked Birthing Center
• Deliveries: 900+ births/year (2–6 deliveries/day)

Unit Details

• L&D Beds: 9 private rooms
• C-Section ORs: 2
• Triage Beds: 4
• Postpartum Beds: 12 private rooms

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• NRP
• Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)
• STABLE – Highly preferred

Required Experience

• Recent Labor & Delivery experience
• Must have C-section circulating experience
• Must be able to circulate independently
• Must be comfortable with Nursery care

Patient Ratios

• L&D: 1:2 (1:1 for active labor/high-risk)
• Postpartum/Mother-Baby: 1:2–3 couplets

Equipment & EMR

• EMR: Meditech Expanse
• Fetal Monitoring: Centricity (GE/CPN)
• Telemetry: Nihon Kohden (tele techs monitor; nurses do not interpret strips)

Floating

• Float within all areas of the Birthing Center (L&D, Postpartum, Nursery)
• May float to other hospital units for tasking/helping hands
• If experienced in Med-Surg, may take Med-Surg patients (non-infectious)

Staffing

• Free Charge Nurse (may take patients if needed)
• OB Techs assist with C-sections and function as CNAs
• RT available 24/7
• OB provider not in-house 24/7 (clinic adjacent to hospital)
• Neonatologist available weekdays
• Pharmacy on-call after hours

Weekend & Holiday Requirements

• Every other weekend
• Participate in holiday rotation
• No call

Scrubs

• Pink (any shade)
• Hospital provides OR scrubs

Common Patient Population

• Routine Labor & Delivery
• 35+ weeks gestation
• Multiples
• Limited high-risk cases
• No VBACs
• Twin vaginal deliveries attempted when appropriate

Orientation

• HR onboarding (~20 minutes)
• Department orientation
• 1 shift with preceptor
