Registered Nurse – Neuro Med-Surg Acute

Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week

Unit Overview

• 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
• Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:4-5
  • Night shift: 1:5-6
• Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless short-staffed
• Patient care techs/nurse aides available with ratios:

  • Days and evenings: 1:9-10
  • Nights: 1:10-12
• Telemetry monitors (Phillips) are used hospital-wide; nurses do not need to interpret strips
• Respiratory equipment includes high flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum of 1 year Med Surg experience within the last year
• One completed travel nursing assignment
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
• Experience with heparin titrated drips (heparin gtt) and ability to titrate drips

Orientation & Scheduling

• Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor; includes computer training and patient care
• Scheduling: 12-hour night shifts; attempts made to accommodate scheduling requests; weekend requirement every other weekend (both Saturday and Sunday)
• Holiday requirement every other holiday
• No call or standby requirement
• Floating: Participates in float rotation with general unit staff; if floated outside general unit, only assigned skills competent to perform with appropriate support

• Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
• Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required for all panels
• Dress code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
• Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
• Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
