Unit Overview

Unit: 8 Southeast – Stepdown
Beds: 32

Patient Ratios

• Stepdown: 1:3
• Combined Assignment: 1:4
  • 2 Stepdown + 2 Med/Surg patients, or
  • 3 Stepdown + 1 Med/Surg patient

Patient Population

• Post-surgical patients
• Thoracic surgery patients
• Medical Stepdown patients

Required Experience

• Strong Med/Surg Stepdown experience
• Ability to:
  • Titrate cardiac drips
  • Independently interpret telemetry strips
  • Care for tracheostomy patients
  • Manage BiPAP patients

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS

Drips (Must Be Comfortable Titrating)

Physician-ordered titration with defined parameters:

• Cardizem
• Amiodarone
• Dopamine
• Nitroglycerin
• Esmolol
• Heparin
• Lasix

No vasopressors on this unit.

Telemetry

• RN must interpret and document cardiac rhythms every 4 hours (or more frequently when titrating medications).
• Central telemetry monitors patients and files rhythm strips into the chart.
• Bedside and centralized monitors available.

Support Staff

• 1 Charge Nurse
• 3 House Supervisors
• 3–4 CNAs per shift

Respiratory Support

• BiPAP
• Tracheostomy care
• No ventilators

Schedule

• Shift: Nights
• Weekend Requirement: 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks (typically Sat/Sun/Sat)
• Holidays required if scheduled
• No call or standby

Floating

• Floating is rare.

Orientation

• 3 unit orientation shifts

Dress Code

• Royal Blue scrubs
