Description

RN Specialty: Med-Surg / Telemetry – Pulmonary & Observation (3 Pavilion / 3T)

Unit Overview

  • Unit: 3 Pavilion (3T) – Pulmonary & Observation
  • Beds: 32
  • Patient Ratio: 1:6
  • Patient Population: Adult & Geriatric

Required Certifications

  • ✅ BLS
  • ✅ ACLS

Required Experience

  • Previous travel experience is mandatory
  • Strong Med-Surg/Telemetry background
  • Experience with:
    • Critical drips
    • Trach care (non-vented trachs)
    • Respiratory patients
  • Strong cardiac background preferred
  • Peritoneal Dialysis experience preferred

Common Patient Diagnoses

  • Pulmonary/Respiratory illnesses
  • General medical conditions
  • Adult and geriatric patients
  • Trach patients (no ventilators)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Telemetry
  • Critical drip management
  • Trach care
  • Cardiac monitoring

Titratable Drips

RNs are required to titrate:

  • Heparin
  • Cardizem (up to 15 mg/hr)
  • Lasix
  • Dop Dopamine (low-dose renal perfusion only)
  • Amiodarone

Telemetry

  • 24/7 Monitor Technicians
  • Charge RN reads rhythm strips
  • Staff RNs must review telemetry strips every shift

Staffing

  • Charge Nurse carries a light assignment (typically 2 patients)
  • May become free charge when staffing allows
  • Travelers may be asked to work Charge Nurse if experienced (training provided)
  • House Supervisor available 24/7

CNA Support

  • Days: 1 CNA : 10 patients
  • Nights: 1 CNA : 15 patients

Respiratory Equipment

  • CPAP
  • BiPAP
  • High Flow Oxygen
  • Trach Collar
  • Room Air Trachs
  • IV Pumps
  • Sequential Compression Devices
  • Pulse Oximetry
  • Specialty Beds

RT manages ventilators; RNs perform trach care.

Shift Schedule

  • Days: 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM
  • Nights: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
  • Schedule created by unit manager.
  • Block scheduling is allowed when staffing permits.

Weekend Requirement

  • Every other weekend
  • Fixed rotation (Weekends 1 & 3 or 2 & 4)

Holiday Requirement

  • Rotates with permanent staff
  • Manager considers previous holiday assignments when scheduling

Floating

May float to:

  • 4P (Med-Surg)
  • 5P (Med-Surg)
  • Emergency Department to care for admitted boarders

Float pool is utilized first before unit staff rotate.

Dress Code

  • RN/LPN: Solid Navy
  • CNA/Monitor Tech: Dark Gray/Pewter
  • Solid scrubs only (no patterns or embroidery)
  • Approved fleece jackets: Gray, Black, Navy, or Royal Blue
  • Undershirts: White, Gray, or Black
  • Closed-toe shoes only (Crocs not permitted)
