Unit Overview

• Beds: 48
• Patient Ratios:
  • Days: 1:5–7
  • Nights: 1:6–8

Required Certifications

• ✅ BLS
• ✅ Active RN License

Experience Required

• Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical RN experience
• First-time travelers accepted

Patient Population

Common diagnoses include:

• Pneumonia
• Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
• Altered Mental Status (AMS)
• GI Bleeds
• Alcohol Withdrawal
• Falls
• General Weakness

Clinical Skills

Required

• General Medical-Surgical nursing
• Basic drip management

Titratable Drips

• Heparin
• Bumex
• Lasix

No cardiac drip titration required.

Charge Nurse

• Days: Two charge nurses; may carry patient assignments.
• Nights:
  • Two charge nurses: may take assignments.
  • One charge nurse: no patient assignment.

CNA/PCT Support

• Ratio: Approximately 1:10–12 patients (may vary)
• Duties include:
  • Vital signs
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • EKGs
  • Telemetry monitor placement
  • Bathing
  • Feeding
  • Toileting
  • Turning and repositioning

Respiratory Support

RT manages:

• CPAP
• BiPAP
• High Flow Oxygen
• Breathing treatments
• Inhalers
• ABGs

RNs are responsible for patient monitoring and basic troubleshooting only.

Telemetry

• Central monitor technicians monitor telemetry.
• RNs are not required to independently interpret telemetry strips.

Scheduling

Shift Hours

• RN: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
• CNA: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Scheduling Notes

• No self-scheduling
• No block scheduling
• Manager prepares the schedule
• Travelers are expected to be flexible
• Rotating staff generally work 2 weeks on days followed by 2 weeks on nights

Weekend Requirement

• Every other weekend

Holiday Requirement

• Travelers may participate in the holiday rotation.
• RN holidays rotate with permanent staff.

Floating

May float to:

• Medical-Surgical
• Med-Surg Telemetry
• Intermediate Care (IMC) for lower-acuity patients

Dress Code

• RN: Navy Blue
• PCT: Ceil Blue
• Unit Secretaries: Black and Pink

Orientation

• Day 1: Educator & Computer System Orientation
• Day 2: Unit orientation with a preceptor
