Description
Sterile Processing Technician (SPD) | Roles & Responsibilities
- Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments and medical equipment.
- Perform manual and mechanical cleaning of reusable medical devices following infection control standards.
- Assemble instrument trays and surgical case carts according to procedure specifications.
- Operate sterilization equipment, including steam sterilizers and low-temperature sterilization systems.
- Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and proper assembly before sterilization.
- Package, label, and document sterilized instruments according to facility and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain inventory and ensure timely distribution of sterile supplies and patient care equipment.
- Monitor sterilization processes using biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
- Collaborate with Operating Room staff and other departments to ensure instrument availability.
- Maintain compliance with AAMI, OSHA, Joint Commission, and infection prevention standards.
Required Documents / Certifications
- Active Sterile Processing Certification (CRCST preferred/required if applicable)
- BLS
- Sterile Processing experience
- Knowledge of instrument decontamination and sterilization techniques
- Experience assembling surgical instrument trays
