- Unit: Medical Surgical – Elmore Hospital
- # of Beds: 10 (can expand to 18)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Typically 1:4; average 1:5; may increase to 1:6 on rare occasions
- Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP
- Common Diagnoses/Types of Patients: Pediatrics to geriatrics. Typical Med-Surg patients include pneumonia, CHF, COPD, hysterectomy, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, babies with elevated bilirubin, asthma exacerbation, and SWING bed (rehab) patients.
- Experience or "Must Have" Skills: Minimum 2 years of experience
- Are RNs Required to Titrate Drips: Very rarely
- Common Titratable and/or Set-Rate Drips: Insulin, antibiotics
- Is There a Charge Nurse on Each Shift: Yes. Charge nurse may take a 1:2 assignment on occasion. Travelers may serve as charge nurse or preceptor.
- Are There Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs on This Unit: Yes, approximately 1:10
- RT Equipment: Everything except ventilators. CPAP, BiPAP (home regimen), and occasional high-flow oxygen. RT sets up and monitors equipment.
- Are There Tele/Monitor Techs on This Unit: Yes, remote telemetry technicians. Preferred that RNs can read telemetry strips. Currently using Spacelab monitors (transition to Philips completed in May 2024).
- Shifts & Scheduling: 12-hour shifts (7:00–7:00). Manager creates the schedule and tries to block night shifts together. Staff may swap shifts.
- Weekend Requirement: Yes. Minimum of 5 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period; may be more based on unit needs. Nights: Friday and Saturday. Days: Saturday or Sunday.
- Holiday Requirement: Yes, as needed.
- Is There Call or a Standby Requirement: No
- Floating Requirements: May float to L&D or ED for helping hands.
- Scrub Color/Dress Code: Any scrub color or pattern permitted. Hospital-provided scrubs available but not required.
- Unit/Department-Specific Orientation: Two 12-hour shifts with a preceptor.
