Description
Job Overview
- Position Type: Contract (Travel Only)
- Specialty: Registered Nurse (RN) - Intensive Care Unit (Mixed ICU)
- Duration: 13 Weeks
- Schedule Requirement: 48 hours per week is STRICTLY MANDATORY and non-negotiable.
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend is the goal, but not guaranteed.
- On-Call / Holidays: No on-call requirement. No Approved Time Off (RTO) allowed during holidays.
- 🚨 Local Radius Rule: Candidates must reside more than 100 miles away from any Monument Health facility.
- Return Staff Policy: Permanent staff must wait at least 1 full year before returning as a traveler.
Required Qualifications & Hard Stops
- Experience: * Minimum 2 years of core ICU experience EXCLUDING travel experience is highly preferred.
- Exception: 1.5 years of ICU experience (excluding travel) may be considered only if the nurse has significant prior RN experience outside the ICU (requires management team approval).
- First-Time Travelers: Not accepted. Must have a minimum of one completed travel assignment.
- Licensure: Active South Dakota (SD) or Compact RN License required.
- Certifications (Must be willing to obtain prior to arrival):
- BLS & ACLS
- NIHSS
- TNCC (STRICTLY REQUIRED) – Decline travelers immediately if they are unwilling to have this in hand before day one.
Unit Environment & Patient Mix
- Unit Layout: A large 39-bed mixed ICU divided into pods (MICU, SICU, CICU, TICU).
- Patient Types: High-acuity, fast-paced setting. Complex surgical, medical, neuro, and a heavy trauma population.
- Clinical Skills Required: High comfort with IV vasoactive drips (pressors, sedation, paralytics), hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry.
- Device Preferences: Impella, IABP, and CRRT experience are strongly preferred.
- Cardiac/CVICU Note: Cardiac experience (CABG/TAVR 24–48hr post-op) is preferred. Travelers will not be given fresh open hearts unless highly experienced and cleared. Travelers do not float to the CVICU side unless specifically qualified.
- Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 (rare)—strictly acuity-dependent.
- Floating: Not common unless overstaffed. If necessary, travelers can float to any adult floor (including Med-Surg/Tele at a 1:4 ratio). Must confirm comfortability during the interview.
Unit Support & Staffing
- CNA Support: 1–2 Nurse Aides per unit + a dedicated mobility float aide.
- Charge Coverage: 2 Clinical Resource Nurses (CRNs) oversee all ICU pods and place all midlines.
- Ancillary Teams: 24/7 Respiratory Therapy (RT) on unit; Phlebotomy handles peripheral blood draws.
- Providers: 3 Intensivists on days; 2 Intensivists + 1 Advanced Practice Provider (APP) on nights.
