Description
Registered Nurse – PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: Day shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
- 36 or 48-hour shifts accepted
- Targeted patient ratios: typically 1:4, can be up to 1:5-6
- Unit may use team nursing model (RNs, LPNs, PCTs partner to care for patient groups) or primary nursing depending on unit needs
- Work includes telemetry, drips, and drawing ABGs
- Cardiac procedures involved: cardiac catheterizations, ablations, pacers, ICDs
- Medications/drips commonly used: Cardizem, Cardene, dobutamine, dopamine, heparin, nitro, insulin
- Navy blue scrubs required
Required Experience & Skills
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of recent experience in Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Experience working in PCU with documented 1:5 patient ratio experience
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by American Heart Association
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience drawing arterial blood gases (ABGs)
- Ability to read and interpret EKG strips
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
Floating & Scheduling
- Traveler will be first to float at employer’s discretion, floating within specialty clusters or to medically appropriate assignments including high-risk respiratory/COVID units
- Floating may include main campus and nearby campuses within 10-15 miles
- Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays
- Employer reserves right to cancel up to 2 shifts per 13-week contract due to low census, and to cancel agreement with 2 weeks’ notice without penalty
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Current Ohio RN license (primary source verification required)
- BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA only, must be current and valid)
- Must pass Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam with up to 3 attempts allowed; remediation required after failures
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., NIH Stroke Certification for some units)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- E-Verify and I-9 compliance required prior to start
- 7-year criminal background check required within 12 months prior to start
- Fingerprinting not required for this unit (unless working with infants, children, elderly home care, pharmacy techs, or pain management clinics)
- Education verification required (primary source)
- Drug screening: 9 or 10 panel negative drug screen within 12 months, including marijuana panel; instant drug screens acceptable if confirmed by lab if positive
- Annual health questionnaire and medical clearance required prior to orientation
- Physical exam within 2 years indicating fitness to work and free of communicable diseases
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap, Flu seasonal vaccination (or approved exemption)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray required; annual TB questionnaire if past positive TB
- Respiratory safety clearance required within 1 year of start and renewed annually
- Two professional references required within 2 years of start (one must be a manager/supervisor/charge nurse)
- Current resume/application required
- Skills checklist updated within 1 year prior to start and annually
- Work history verification required if references are not available
Additional Notes
- Application must clearly show 1:5 ratio experience in SD or PCU to be considered; ICU experience alone is insufficient
- Request for time off (RTO) must be submitted with initial application; no RTO added after offer
- Travelers are not eligible for employer employee incentives
- Agency may float nurses in/out of specialty clusters as needed
This position is ideal for experienced cardiac RNs with progressive care or step-down unit experience who are comfortable with telemetry, cardiac drips, and team nursing models, and who have strong EPIC skills. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
