Job Description – Sterile Processing Technician

Location: Norton Women's & Children's Hospital, 4001 Dutchmans Lane, Louisville, KY 40207
Department: Sterile Processing
Job Type: Contract (13 Weeks)
Shift: Nights | 6:00 PM – 6:30 AM
Schedule: 3 x 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week)

 

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Sterile Processing Technician to join the Sterile Processing Department at Norton Women's & Children's Hospital. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical instruments, medical equipment, and supplies used throughout the hospital. This role is essential in ensuring patient safety by maintaining compliance with hospital policies, infection prevention standards, and industry best practices.

The ideal candidate demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, strong organizational skills, critical thinking, and the ability to prioritize tasks while working effectively in a fast-paced team environment.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
  • Operate sterilization equipment following established hospital policies and AAMI standards.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and proper assembly before sterilization.
  • Assemble procedure trays and instrument sets accurately according to count sheets.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of sterilization loads and quality assurance records.
  • Store and distribute sterile supplies and equipment throughout the hospital.
  • Monitor sterilization processes using biological, chemical, and mechanical indicators.
  • Maintain inventory levels and ensure proper rotation of sterile supplies.
  • Follow infection prevention, safety, and regulatory standards at all times.
  • Utilize basic computer systems for documentation, tracking, and inventory management.
  • Communicate effectively with surgical services and other hospital departments.
  • Complete required quarterly competency assessments and ongoing education requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum 2 years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital.
  • Current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) certification.
  • Certification must be obtained through HSPA (formerly IAHCSMM) or CBSPD.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
