Job Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) – Labor & Delivery to provide comprehensive nursing care to women during labor, delivery, recovery, and the immediate postpartum period. The RN will collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, pediatric providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, evidence-based care for mothers and newborns. The ideal candidate is skilled in fetal monitoring, labor management, emergency obstetric care, and neonatal resuscitation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients.
- Monitor maternal and fetal status using electronic fetal monitoring (EFM).
- Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and other treatments as prescribed.
- Assist physicians during vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, and obstetric emergencies.
- Recognize and respond to maternal and neonatal complications.
- Perform newborn assessments and provide immediate newborn care.
- Educate patients and families regarding labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records (EMR).
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality patient outcomes.
- Adhere to hospital policies, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of recent Labor & Delivery experience preferred (travel positions generally require this).
- Experience with high-risk obstetrics and emergency deliveries preferred.
- Experience using Epic or other EMR systems is preferred.
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) License issued by the State of Michigan or eligibility to practice in Michigan.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – AHA
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Preferred Certifications
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification such as AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring or NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) certification.
- AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
- Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) – NCC
- Certified Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) – NCC (if not already held)
- STABLE Program certification (preferred by some facilities)
Required Skills
- Labor assessment and management

- IV therapy and medication administration
- OR circulating for Cesarean sections (preferred by many Michigan hospitals)
- Excellent communication and patient education skills
- Critical thinking and emergency decision-making
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to respond quickly during obstetric emergencies.
- Ability to work 12-hour shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required.
